About this listen

The Nigger of the Narcissus: A Tale of the Forecastle (1897; also subtitled A Tale of the Sea and published in the US as The Children of the Sea) is a novella by Joseph Conrad. Because of its quality compared to earlier works, some have described it as marking the start of Conrad's major, or middle, period; others have placed it as the best work of his early, or first, period. This is the first professionally recorded and produced audiobook version of this work.

I have no idea what this other reviewer was describing when he panned the narration of this book. It is a good listen. The narrator tells the story in a way that is enjoyable to listen to and easy to follow. Also, let's face it, you are not going to find Morgan Freeman or Grover Gardner narrating a little obscure title such as this.

The story is fine and beautifully written. Despite the title, the book is not a 'racist' book, especially for it's time. The 'N word' is used as a descriptive in that day and age without connoting much more that 'a man of African descent'. It is an ugly word to our modern ears and rightly so. The author is just as dismissive and disrespectful of the other stereotypes he includes as characters in the book - the Irishman, the Finn, the Russian, the Swede, etc.

Good story, well told, good listen. And Very Good narration!

The Narrator did a fine job! It is a great listen

Simply put, the narrator is awful. Find a different narrated version. This version is a waste of time. Thank you, Audible, for having a great return policy in times like these.

Book is a classic, narrator not so much.
