About this listen

The Nile, like all of Egypt, is both timeless and ever-changing. In this audio, renowned Egyptologist Toby Wilkinson takes us on a journey downriver that is both history and travelogue. We begin at the First Nile Cataract, close to the modern city of Aswan. From there, Wilkinson guides us through the illustrious nation birthed by this great river.

We see Thebes, with its Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, and Luxor Temple. We visit the fertile Fayum, the Great Pyramid of Giza, and finally, the pulsing city of Cairo, where the Arab Spring erupted on the bridges over the water. Along the way, Wilkinson introduces us to the gods, pharaohs, and emperors who joined their fate to the Nile and gained immortality; and to the adventurers, archaeologists, and historians who have all fallen under its spell. Peerlessly erudite, vividly told, The Nile brings the course of this enduring river into stunning view.

It was good information. Tough to fully appreciate the history without seeing pictures along the way. Heading to Egypt in Oct.

An excellent overview of the Nile, Past & Present

I've been fascinated by the information in this book. Wilkinson has done a masterful job of blending stories from the past based on archeology with stories of his own experiences while living in, working in or simply touring Egypt. A great read for anyone wanting a general overview of Egypt, ancient and modern.

Best to Have a Brit Narrate a Brit Book

The content is fantastic. What would be grand would be to at least have someone with a passing interest in Egyptology or share a greater linguistic link. One of the best Egyptology books available. and well worth the time to listen.

A Riverboat Cruise from the luxury of your phone

This book does a wonderful job of outlining thousands of years of history along one of the most recognized rivers in the world. Its strength lies in Toby Wilkinson’s expert knowledge of both ancient and modern Egyptian history. As an audiobook, at times it can be difficult to visualize when and where a listener is, owing to the book’s massive stretches in time and place. In the end however, like the nile, the flow of this audiobook is life-giving and serene. A outstanding experience traveling the breath of the Nile.
