About this listen
What is authoritarianism? And what made people give others the power to rule over them?
Unchallenged authority serves at the heart of authoritarianism. In an age of democracy, authoritarianism is often met with stark criticism, whether the discussion is on tyranny, the psychology of totalitarianism, or how democracies die.
Can authoritarian regimes be successful in the eyes of their citizens? Some nations thrive under authoritarian rule, while others have numerous issues leading to uprisings and protests.

This book explores some of the factors that have historically been the sources of legitimacy for authoritarian regimes worldwide. You will discover:
The origins, and evolution of authoritarianism – discover its complex roots and key authoritarian moments in history

Case studies and prime authoritarian government examples and how they were legitimized
The blow to authoritarianism - from the English Magna Carta to the Bill of Rights

Is authoritarianism on the way back?
And much more.

The last is a retelling of the most accepted historical account of it's actual invention, slightly altered of course, to assure that it's in keeping with the humorous tone of the other stories.

The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Based on seven years of ground-breaking research and hundreds of interviews, I Thought It Was Just Me shines a long-overdue light on an important truth: Our imperfections are what connect us to each other and to our humanity. Our vulnerabilities are not weaknesses; they are powerful reminders to keep our hearts and minds open to the reality that we're all in this together.

Great Narration and very interesting!
This audiobook has really good narration; a clear voice, pleasant tone and just about right for this sort of information. It's really interesting to hear about the history of authoritarianism; who started it and applied in in which countries and why and when. The book gives a rounded account of the various Kings, Queens and leaders of history and who did what, and what added to Authoritarianism rising. I feel like I have learned something for sure.

Exploring the evolution of authoritarianism
This audiobook really opened my eyes to the history and complexity of authoritarian regimes. It goes through the history of ancient civilizations such as ancient Rome all the way to the modern day. The explanation and analysis of how these systems rise to power and why people submit to them was very fascinating to learn about. Overall a great book that will increase your understanding of human psychology, politics, and power dynamics.

An Eye-Opening Dive into Authoritarianism
If you're into how political systems rise and fall, this audiobook is a must-listen. It dives deep into the impact of authoritarianism throughout history, looking at everything from ancient empires like Rome and the Ottomans to today’s regimes like North Korea and Saudi Arabia.
The author, Eric Nilsen, does a solid job explaining how these power structures emerged, why some collapsed, and how others managed to stick around.
One of the more intriguing points this book tackles is why people would let authoritarian leaders come to power in the first place. It’s an eye-opener, especially in a time when democracy itself feels fragile in so many parts of the world.
After finishing this book, I came away with a deeper understanding of how power works, both in the past and in the present. So if you’re interested in politics, history, or just want a better grasp of how today’s world leaders got to where they are, this is the book for you.
Highly recommended if you enjoy books that make you see the world in a different way.

A Fascinating Dive into the Roots of Power
A thought-provoking and meticulously researched audiobook that delves deep into the historical and political foundations of authoritarianism. As someone who's always been interested in how power shapes societies, I found this audiobook to be not only informative but incredibly engaging. The book seamlessly weaves together historical case studies of empires like the Roman, Ottoman, and Akkadian, while drawing compelling connections to modern-day authoritarian regimes. This approach offers a well-rounded perspective, making it easy to see why authoritarianism has persisted throughout history and, more surprisingly, why it continues to thrive in certain parts of the world today.

A compelling, well-researched narrative
This insightful book offers a comprehensive look at the evolution of authoritarianism, tracing its origins from ancient empires to modern political systems. The detailed analysis of authoritarian regimes, such as the Roman and Ottoman Empires, provides a fascinating perspective on how power has been wielded throughout history. By examining both philosophical ideas and historical events, the book deepens readers' understanding of why people submit to authoritarian rule and how these systems have thrived or collapsed. The comparison between the rise of authoritarianism and the development of democracy is thought-provoking, raising questions about the current state of global politics.
