About this listen
In The Pact, the three share the account of their struggle to keep the pledge they made: a pledge that would alter the course of their lives and lead them to success they could barely imagine. Today Davis and Hunt are doctors, and Jenkins is a dentist. The success of the three doctors is proof that young men can bring out the best in one another and themselves instead of pulling one another down, and it demonstrates that when we "stand on the solid rock of brotherhood" as Martin Luther King, Jr., wrote, remarkable things can happen.

Story
The Three Doctors, Drs. Sampson Davis, George Jenkins, and Rameck Hunt, discovered early in their friendship that they shared one disturbing trait: as children, they had to navigate life in inner-city Newark without a father's support and guidance. While each young man dealt with the turmoil caused by an absent father, with no male role model to turn to for advice, each veered dangerously close to a life of delinquency, drugs, and crime. But despite great odds, the three overcame the statistics.

Story
In 1994, an idealistic first-year teacher in Long Beach, California, named Erin Gruwell confronted a room of “unteachable, at-risk” students. She had intercepted a note with an ugly racial caricature and angrily declared that this was precisely the sort of thing that led to the Holocaust. She was met by uncomprehending looks - none of her students had heard of one of the defining moments of the 20th century. So she rebooted her entire curriculum, using treasured books such as Anne Frank’s diary as her guide to combat intolerance and misunderstanding.

Story
Bea and Awilda have been best friends from the moment Awilda threw her 14-year-old self across Bea’s twin-sized bed as if they had known each other forever. Bubbly, adventurous Awilda taught sheltered, shy Bea how to dress, wear her hair, and what to do with boys. She even introduced Bea to her husband, Lonnie, in college, who pledged to take good care of her for the rest of their lives. But philanderer Lonnie breaks that promise over and over again, leaving Bea to wrestle with her self-esteem and longtime secret addiction.

Harriet Tubman was born a slave and dreamed of being free. She was willing to risk everything - including her own life - to see that dream come true. When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave - "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams" - wasn't about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because "time is all you have... and you may find one day that you have less than you think").

Critic reviews
"Teens, especially those at risk, who hear this tale of the authors' struggle to make something of their lives in the face of the enormous temptations of the street and to support each other so that all three might succeed will receive a gift: an extraordinary model of self-determination." (Library Journal)
"Through the strength of their friendship, together these three young men defied the odds. They are an inspiration to young people everywhere, and their message is one that can transform the world." (Bill Cosby)
"The authors aren't professional readers....But the authenticity of their urban accents and the earnestness and sincerity in their voices give their inspiring tale an immediacy that would be lost with a professional narrator." (Publishers Weekly)

Worth a Listen
Alternating chapters narrated by the authors. Excellent sharing by these 3 men who met as boys in Newark, NJ area, of their stories of the difficulties of growing up in the black neighborhoods, finding their way, one step at a time, eventually through education, to The Pact that led them each to become doctors who now live in and give back to that same community. None of them had a straight or easy path, but they supported each other, had some helpful mentors, and a lot of inner strength. I noticed this book at our library website as part of a town-wide reading selection. Glad I listened to it and heard these stories.
