About this listen

The New Orleans PD needs a helping hand to solve a string of murders and when the new crime investigator shows up, more than crime scenes needs investigating.

Forensic scientist Brody Whalen is NOPDs new kid on the block. He’s good at his job, having helped the FBI solve a few high-profile murders. A family inheritance brings him to the Big Easy and he’s looking forward to just working in the laboratory for a while. But he discovers something bone-chilling while investigating the death of a homeless man, something that ties multiple cases together.

New Orleans has a serial killer on the loose.

Sheriff Grace Cooper is knee-deep in bodies as the homeless population of her city seems to be dropping like flies. She can’t seem to catch a break. Added to her frustration is the handsome new forensic scientist that seems to constantly be in her dreams with his husky laugh and chiseled abs. He makes it hard for her to concentrate on work which makes her mood foul.

When Brody comes to Grace with suspicions of foul play, she finds herself suddenly with a bigger problem on her hands. Who is killing the homeless of New Orleans?

And can she and Brody find them before they strike again?

They are The Perfect Mix for fighting crime.

Serial killer

The Perfect Mix is a great mystery involving a sheriff and her new CSI technician. They were high school sweethearts but have been apart for about ten years. They grow closer while investigating this strange case. Great narration by Jesse Werner.

Entertaining!

This was my first Beth A. Freely's book, and won't be my last. This is the first book in the Eligible Bachelor series. Grace and Broody's romantic suspense is entertaining, filled with mystery, intrigue, and twists and turns. They are both intesting characters. The storyline is fast-paced, and intriguing. I liked this second chance romance. Jesse Werner did a good job bringing these characters, and this story to life. I enjoyed it. Serial Killer

I enjoyed this story. The romance, suspense, intrigue, overall a good book. Brody is back in New Orleans. He ends up working with Grace (the Sheriff) to hunt down a serial killer. The story was entertaining, and well written. The narration was excellently done, a real pleasure. Between the story and narration, I was fully pulled into the book. It went by way too fast! Death in New Orleans

This is a gripping murder mystery. It is short novella, but it held my attention until the end. The characters are wonderful and the ending delivers.

A Tough Listen, But Some Bright Spots

I have to admit, the female voice just didn’t work for me—it was bad to the point where I couldn’t help but laugh every time she spoke. The male voice was nice - like NICE - but the attempt at the female voice made it harder for me to really get into the story the way I wanted to. I also felt like the character development could have been a little deeper, though I understand some of the backstory was implied since the characters had a shared past. While this one wasn’t a page-turner for me, I can see how others might enjoy it.

Not Enjoyable on Several Fronts

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and covers certainly do give you an impression of what a book will be about, as do series names. So, when I began this audiobook, I came in with certain preconceptions about the type of story it would be. I thought it may be a bit more fun and flirty, less serious. However, it is definitely more of a serious mystery story with too many gratuitous intimacy scenes for such a short book (under 3 hours in audiobook format). I'm no prude and don't mind intimate scenes at all. In fact, I enjoy well-written ones grounded in character. These did not feel like that. But that was not my biggest issue with the story. In general, I think shorter-form stories are harder to write well than longer ones, and it is particularly difficult to create a satisfying mystery novella. They just don’t have enough word real estate for all that a satisfying mystery must have—many suspects, blind alleys, red herrings, etc.—or at least, very few authors have done so successfully in the mystery novellas I’ve read. Unfortunately, these exception-to-the-rule good mystery novellas.

I also did not like the narrator’s voicings for most characters. He seemed to have an exaggerated sense of what Louisiana accents should be. The heroine’s supposed New Orleans accent grated on my last nerve whenever I heard it. The narrator even mispronounced that city's name the way a local would say it. And his Cajun accent! What an insult to true Cajuns! Far better books are out there; don't waste your time with this one!
