Loyalty-Free Workplace!

As soon as I saw the phrase "loyalty-free workplace" I just knew that I had to check this one out. Lori Rassas does a wonderful job of painting vivid scenarios of not only interview situations but also situations while on the job that could derail progress or turn your dream into a nightmare.

I found myself wishing that I could share this book with former colleagues so that they could learn some great tips about how to navigate the murky waters of that "loyalty-free workplace" Lori reminds us about. I think one of the greatest things people forget is that businesses are in place, generally, to make money. Lori's constant use of the phrase" loyalty-free workplace" really drove that point home. There is no loyalty, there's only the bottom line.

I really enjoyed the smooth transition between the two narrators. Sometimes, having two different voices in an audiobook can be a little bit jarring, but the experience was good. They each brought their own individual flair to the presentation and it was easy to follow along.

When I first saw how long the book was I thought to myself, Why will it take 5 hours to convey this information?" But, it worked out well. I found myself wishing that the book wasn't coming to an end. If you need some tips on how to get through the dog-eat-dog world of business this one is a good one. Check it out.

Practical info with plenty of tips and examples

This book provides plenty of tips and examples of how to go about in the current job environment. I found both well-known information and some newer ways of thinking of the workplace in response to today’s working environment.

Five major points are listed in the book:
1. Cash is King: A strong salary influences future earning potential as your career advances.
2. Remember Who's Boss: Make your boss look good, and you will look good
3. Turn Troubles into Triumphs
4. Expand Your Hunting Grounds: Opportunities can come from unexpected places.
5. "How Can I Help You?": Help others and they will help you. In the same vein, make it easy for others to help you.

There was plenty of useful advice on interviewing, when to think about moving to a new position and making sure you focus on what the recruiters are looking for. A lot of this information was not new to me, but was still really good to get a refresher on. For me the greatest value in this book lies in how it presented networking. Networking is something I’ve always felt uneasy or hesitant with, but Ms. Rassas presents networking the best way I have heard so far and provides the clearest explanation as to why networking is important.

The accompanying examples throughout the book drive all the points home. You get successful and unsuccessful scenarios, which allow you to realize things you may have been doing without even realizing. I have certainly stayed at a job because I was loyal to the people and the company despite being recruited for a better opportunity elsewhere, only to wonder why I made the decision I did. I finally reached a full post-mortem conclusion of why I made that decision while listening to this book. The current job market demands people look at employment differently. The philosophy presented; that you ‘rent’ not ‘own’ a job, is something every person needs to hear in today’s economy and job market. The author draws on her experience from working on both sides of the hiring table and that allows her to present thoughtful tips and advice on navigating this change in thinking.

Listening is made easy by the use of two narrators. One does the ‘narration’ while the other does the examples/scenarios. This made the book quite easy to follow. There were a few times where a background sound slipped through (but only when I listened through headphones and it didn’t happen too often).

Overall; while there were some tips I know won’t work with my personality, there were plenty that will. I think most people will find the same. So much is presented here that everyone can pull a good amount of useful information, therefore I would recommend this book to anyone at any stage of their career.
