When former Russian SVR Captain Anastasia “Anya” Burinkova defected to the United States, the life she imagined was far from the one she discovered. As the freedom she’s longed for turns to little more than imprisonment, her deadly skill set, forged and honed behind the Iron Curtain, is the only key that can possibly unshackle her. A late-night vigilante mission under the veil of darkness turns from vendetta to entrapment in an instant. Publisher's summary
When American covert operative Chase Fulton’s life is turned upside down with news almost too good to be true, everything he believes about his world changes in an instant, and the life he dedicated to serving his country and the preservation of freedom suddenly fades out of focus as a new reality becomes the center of his existence. But before the dream of his new life can materialize, one final mission demands his devotion like never before.
American hostages, including a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist, have fallen into the hands of Los Toros, one of the world’s most ruthless and violent drug cartels, and no one is dispatched to rescue the doomed victims. As the truth about why the hostages have been abandoned by their country reveals itself, an even more horrific reality looms on the horizon for Chase and his team of seasoned operatives.
On the edge of the Mexican desert, just out of sight of the resort paradise of Cabo San Lucas, maniacal forces lurk not only in the shadows, but also boldly in the bright midday sun, unafraid of those who would dare try standing between them and the imminently condemned victims of their ferocious, bloodthirsty fury.
Can Chase survive the mission he swears will be his last, or will he draw his final breath beneath the falling blade of the darkest enemy he’s ever faced?

Story
It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

Story
When former Russian SVR Captain Anastasia “Anya” Burinkova defected to the United States, the life she imagined was far from the one she discovered. A late-night vigilante mission under the veil of darkness turns from vendetta to entrapment in an instant. What should’ve been a mission to right decades-old injustices becomes a deadly encounter with federal agents.

A new level of writing and story telling
This book hit me hardest emotional. It showed insights into the emotional trauma of both Anya and Chase. I live near Fort Bragg and see our warriors get up and disappear at a moments notice. They leave their family and friends without a word. When they reappear they step out of the warrior and back into our world. We don’t see the trauma, but it is there. Cap’s books gives us a brief look at what they may have gone thru. Thank you Cap and all those who serve in that hidden world.

So close but not there yet! Please kill off Penny soon!
i would never miss a Cap book from either series. i am not a fan of the style change from the early books but he is such a great author I love his stories. Only negative is of course Penny. She is so selfish, her parts drag down every story and Chase is so handicapped by her. I am holding out hope he eventually kills her off. And to make matters worse, in recent books when Penny in out of the picture, it seems like the Skipper character has been changed and has become Penny 2. Other than that, the books including this one are awesome. Sorry for the Penny hate but to me Anya is a 1,000 times better character.
