About this listen

A young writer named Darcy opens his door to an affable, six hundred year old phantom, forever changing his life.

Through the course of an evening, the phantom, who cheekily calls himself Maverick, pours out his story in an attempt to stop the looming war of the immortal branches: phantoms, sprites, vampires, and werewolves.

His epic tale begins in 1450 on the streets of Rome, where he meets his untimely death by a phantom with an age-old grudge. In a matter of moments, he is unwillingly thrust into the world of immortals. But his tumultuous time among his new brethren is brief, and Maverick spends the next two hundred years defying his fate by establishing the Tudor Dynasty. Yet after the death of Elizabeth I in 1603, he grows inconsolable and seeks solace in the cold dirt of the earth.

It is a lonely vampire who lures him from his grief, forging an eternal friendship. Maverick is invigorated by a trip to Africa with the vampire Hadrian, and embarks on a quest to join the mysterious Celaremors, eager to learn of his immortal heritage. Along the way, he stumbles upon an unlikely trio of friends: a sprite, a vampire, and a werewolf. Bolstered by this kinship, Maverick discovers his true purpose: to build an everlasting home for his immortal companions.

While scouring the Wild West for an ideal plot of land in 1901, Maverick meets an outcast mortal who alters his stars and captures his heart. His life appears complete, until friends from his past resurface, plagued by haunting voices and gruesome nightmares. As an ancient threat rises, a tyrannical vampire intent on the imprisonment of humankind and dominion over the immortals, Maverick must band together with his immortal family to maintain order in the mortal and immortal worlds. But are they too late? Has the preternatural world war already begun?
