Publisher's summary

The Pickwick Papers was Dickens' first novel. Retired businessman and confirmed bachelor Mr. Samuel Pickwick, Esquire, embarks on a journey through the English countryside accompanied by three fellow "Pickwickians": Mr. Tupman, Mr. Snodgrass, and Mr. Winkle. It is a joy to hear of their misadventures in search of stories and characters of interest and the repeated efforts of the quick-witted Sam Weller (Mr. Pickwick's manservant) to rescue them all from disaster. With a host of unlikely and wonderful characters, this masterpiece of comic writing is still to this day one of literature's most beloved works.

Great Expectations is arguably Dickens' finest work. Chapter one opens up in a lonely graveyard on the marshes in Southern England, where we first meet young Pip and witness a terrifying meeting with an escaped convict. The novel charts the life of Pip from boy to young man, during which Dickens treats us to array of unforgettable characters, from the lovable Joe and the servile Pumblechuck to the jilted Miss Havisham and the faithful Herbert Pocket.

Dickens and Hynes/ what a team!

We know Dickens is one of our greatest story tellers hands down. But combined with the awesome abilities of narrator Tadhg Hynes, you have hours and hours of pure entertainment. You can’t get better if you had an ensemble of great actors.
I recommend this tour de force to anyone who’s looking to immerse him/herself in Dickens world.
Thank you Audible for joining these two wonderful entities for Two Great reads!

A great collection

What did you love best about The Pickwick Papers & Great Expectations?

Both books are classics, and, I'd never heard of combining two books like that before.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Everyone, Pip in particular, seeing his journey from child to man was amazing.

What about Tadhg Hynes’s performance did you like?

Everything, though at times his use of different accents made it difficult to understand whom he was voicing.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Nope.

Any additional comments?

A must-have for fans of Dickins works.

Read the books years ago

To follow Mr Pickwick and his companions in the 19th century England is an absolute look into that time and age. I had a good experience reading the book and repeating the same listening to this book, it was a real good way to re enjoy the long story Dickens wrote. I am sure you will think that the story takes you through the meeting of people along the way and the things that took place, as if you were there, even if you have not read the book, listening is about as good.

Did not hold my interest.

What would have made The Pickwick Papers & Great Expectations better?

For the story to not drag on for so long. I really only wanted the book called Great Expectations.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I will most likely stick to urban fiction or African American fiction, but sometimes i will be looking for a financial book or two.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Tadhg Hynes?

Am not sure on this one.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment

Any additional comments?

None at this time except I wish I could switch this book out for another title.
