Brother Lawrence
About this listen
DISCOVER THE SECRET LIFE OF SIMPLE SPIRITUALITY...
Entertaining and enlightening more Christians than any other book of the past three hundred years, Brother Lawrence's timeless classic finds new life in this vibrant and faithful adaptation. Join the millions of readers/listeners growing a nonstop awareness of God through the life and wisdom of a humble cook.
_________________________
"The writings of Brother Lawrence are the ultimate in simplicity; ideas woven like costly threads to make a pattern of great beauty." - A.W. Tozer, author of The Pursuit of God
In today's culture of hustle and hurry, we often push prayer to the margins of our busy to-do lists, leaving us dry and burnt out. This unparalleled spiritual classic offers the solution to our problem–but not in the way we might expect.
Written by an uneducated cook after many years in the kitchen, this book advises us not to change our daily duties to make them more "holy." Instead, it encourages us to experience God in the midst of our mundane days, giving simple, practical insight into the joy of holding a constant, never-ending conversation with our Maker.
Since its publication more than three hundred years ago, the message of this modest book has inspired millions of people seeking to realize a continual awareness of God. Among its legion of devotees is A.W. Tozer, who said, “(Lawrence) wrote very little, but what he wrote has seemed to several generations of Christians to be so rare and so beautiful as to deserve a place near the top among the world’s great books of devotion.”
In today’s age of constant distraction and activity, we believe Lawrence’s message is more revolutionary and needed than ever and is primed to impact millions more in the coming generations.

Story
Brother Lawrence was a 17th century Christian who had a dramatic spiritual awakening at the age of 18. Seeing a tree in winter, his soul suddenly opened to the presence of God. Within six years he had entered a Carmelite monastery in Paris, where he worked chiefly in the kitchen, cooking and cleaning. He practiced a simple and natural method. He merely turned his attention to the Divine Presence available at all times during any activity. He reports that he was as fully present with God while washing dishes in the kitchen as he was when partaking of the sacrament in worship.

Story
What can the lay person learn from the life of a monk? Solitude and Silence are two pillars of monastic life that many people quickly point to as the hardest and most confusing parts of this kind of religious consecration. However, the great spiritual writer Thomas à Kempis, author of The Imitation of Christ, helps us to understand that all Christians are called to some solitude and silence in our lives while not taking on a complete eremitical life.

Do you beat yourself up when what you feel doesn’t align with the person you think you should be? You “should” be a good friend, but you feel hurt by past betrayals. You “should” be content, but you feel lonely or unfulfilled. You “should” have faith, but you feel discouraged by unanswered prayers. Instead of working through these inner tensions, you guilt-trip or gaslight yourself, which just leaves you feeling stuck, defeated, and trapped by conflicting feelings. But there is another path.

We are constantly being formed by the world around us. To be formed by Jesus will require us to become his apprentice. To live by what the first Christian disciples called a Rule of Life—a set of practices and relational rhythms that slow us down and open up space in our daily lives for God to do what only God can do—transforms the deepest parts of us to become like him.

In the beginning, God created Adam. Then he made Eve. And ever since we've been picking up the pieces. Loveology is just that - a theology of love. With an autobiographical thread that turns an audiobook into a story, pastor and speaker John Mark Comer shares about what is right in male/female relationships - what God intended in the Garden. And about what is wrong - the fallout in a post-Eden world. Loveology starts with marriage and works backward.

Story
This classic work from Thomas à Kempis, author of The Imitation of Christ, is now available in English for the first time. It is a simple truth that, without the virtue of humility, we cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. It simply cannot be done. Just as pride is the root and source of all sin, so is humility, the foundational virtue in which all other virtues must be grounded if they are to bear fruit. Humility is the heartbeat of the saints. It is the virtue that conforms us most closely to Christ.

What does it mean to "think Orthodox"? What are the unspoken and unexplored premises and presumptions underlying what Christians believe? Orthodox Christianity is based on preserving the mind of the early Church, its phronema. Dr. Jeannie Constantinou brings her more than 40 years' experience as a professor, Bible teacher, and speaker to bear in explaining what the Orthodox phronema is, how it can be acquired, and how that phronema is expressed in true Orthodox theology.

Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

Just before Christmas in 1843, a debt-ridden and dispirited Charles Dickens wrote a small book he hoped would keep his creditors at bay. His publisher turned it down, so Dickens used what little money he had to put out A Christmas Carol himself. He worried it might be the end of his career as a novelist. The book immediately caused a sensation. And it breathed new life into a holiday that had fallen into disfavor, undermined by lingering Puritanism and the cold modernity of the Industrial Revolution.

Story
The Interior Castle, also titled The Mansions, is a classic work of Christian mysticism by St. Teresa of Ávila. Published in 1588, the text serves as a practical guide for those who wish to achieve mystical union with the divine. Teresa viewed the soul as a “castle made of a single diamond”, which contains seven mansions or dwelling places. The concept of the immanence of God - who dwells in the seventh mansion - was central to her spirituality.

The saints, the heroes of the Roman Catholic faith, lived lives of holiness, dedicated to serving God. The saints lived at different times in different places throughout history, but they all shared a love of God that has been documented through the teachings of the Church. Today, the saints serve as examples for all Catholics, showing the believers how to lead a more spiritual life. Catholic devotions are particular customs, rituals and practices of worship or in honour of the saints that are in addition to the liturgy of the Catholic Church.

A masterpiece of satire, this classic has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below". At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C. S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly-wise old devil to his nephew Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man. The Screwtape Letters is the most engaging and humorous account of temptation - and triumph over it - ever written.

At times it seemed it was Brother Lawrence speaking. There is No Formula to a Closer Relationship
I have read this book several times, at different points in my life. Each time I have absorbed something new. This is a short and easy read, but Northcutt suggests in his preface that we read it slowly and ponder small amounts at a time. That would be my suggestion, as well. This book is a compilation of letters and conversations that can easily be pondered one at a time. As part of the Modern Saints series, Northcutt has taken this already enjoyable book and converted some of the phrasing and terminology into modern prose that is relatable to our current day life, while not losing any content. Brother Lawrence has much to offer a 20th century follower of Christ. Not only is his faith and relationship with the living God enviable, but it is also affirming. His approach to getting closer to God was to constantly BE with Him and recognize that every action, whether for work or play, should be done for the glory of God. He didn't suggest a 10 point formula or list of rules to follow, but confirmed that a closeness to God can be obtained by just drawing closer. Easier said than done, but so good to hear! I highly suggest owning this book and reading it every few years, if not more often! Having this book also in audio format has added a new way to enjoy this book. I look forward to more of the Modern Saints books being released with audio editions!

I love how simply Brother Lawrence explains how to practice God's presence. If you've picked this book up it's probably because you're craving closer relationship with God. Brother Lawrence says that God will answer this prayer and teach us to do this through Holy Spirit. I'm so thankful for this modern translation. I originally tried to read it in its original text. I couldn't understand it at all. Some might be able to, but not I. I love this book and I'm getting ready to listen to it for the 3rd time. Like the Bible you can hear new things each time you listen to it. I highly recommend this book!
