About this listen

For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about.

Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’ taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19.

The characters you will meet in this audiobook are as fascinating as they are unexpected. A 13-year-old girl’s science project on transmission of an airborne pathogen develops into a very grown-up model of disease control. A local public-health officer uses her worm’s-eye view to see what the CDC misses and reveals great truths about American society. A secret team of dissenting doctors, nicknamed the Wolverines, has everything necessary to fight the pandemic: brilliant backgrounds, world-class labs, prior experience with the pandemic scares of bird flu and swine flu...everything, that is, except official permission to implement their work.

Michael Lewis is not shy about calling these people heroes for their refusal to follow directives that they know to be based on misinformation and bad science. Even the internet, as crucial as it is to their exchange of ideas, poses a risk to them. They never know for sure who else might be listening in.

Good book bad narration

Focused on California and not the national government. Details the horror story of the American response to Covid-19. Shameful.

Unnerving

I liked the book but hated the content... typical American I guess... knew something had been drastically wrong with our system but didn't know detail... still wish I didn't. Will try not to bury my head in sand again!

Debrief of the Pandemic!

Loved the audible version of this book. I have a tendency to skim and I didn't want to miss a thing!

if u like Lewis, and his style, u will luv it. Politics aside, our healthcare system needs to be ready and The Premonition allowed me to see it

Great story. But I Actually checked to see whether a computer was reading this. Very off-putting.

Wish I had bought the book

I preordered this on Audible and won’t make that mistake again. I realize I’m piling on at this point but it is what it is. I actually feel bad for the narrator. Either she wasn’t prepared for this project or this just wasn’t the right subject matter for her talents. I was relieved when it was finally over. The words however are typical Michael Lewis, with superbly crafted stories that give us insight into historic events. My takeaway; government in the right hands can make lives better, in the wrong hands, snuffs those lives out.

Why the US Covid-19 response was destined to fail

This book by Michael Lewis is well worth the time, as it tells a story not told elsewhere. Trump is only a co-morbidity, and the Centers for Disease Control the main culprit. I would have enjoyed this more, but the reader placed her emphasis so badly that I had to replay a great portion of it to extract the meaning.

Engaging, Shocking, Outraging

Michael Lewis has an incredible nose for interesting and compelling stories, especially for those centered around recent calamities.

I knew that the US response to the pandemic was a disaster, but this book gets to the heart of the matter. It also shows that there are those still in and around the system that care about public safety and taking the right action. This book also helped me to better understand what makes COVID so insidious and update my mental models.

I highly recommend this book!

Great book, wish Michael would narrate it himself

Really great series of stories about why our pandemic response was flawed. I love Michael Lewis’s podcast and was hoping he would voice the book himself.

Riveting.

Great characters and storytelling, even though it's nonfiction! I'm gifting it to a friend.
