About this listen

A psychological thriller before its time, James Hogg’s Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner, published in 1824, takes us back to the world of 18th-century Scotland, into a mind haunted by religious obsession, and driven to commit murder. The events are told from several different viewpoints, so that truth and reality appear to dissolve in this disturbing story of the dark legacy of Calvinist doctrine, and how it led one man to madness.

Misunderstood and neglected for more than a century, The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner is now regarded as a classic of the supernatural, comparable with Frankenstein, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, or Dracula.

A gripping story

Well worth a listen or reading. Would that God would keep us all from such a delusion as this man suffered from his own heart's betrayal and the craftiness of the great deceiver.

Creepy and Confusing

Very creepy and gothic in an 18th century gothic way, but also very confusing. Lots of gothic novels give you answers at the end--don't expect that here.

Definitely best for people who are already comfortable with 18th century novels. I wouldn't suggest this as a first attempt for literature of that century. Very competently narrated although sometimes the Scottish accent got so strong I had to turn to the actual text to try to understand what was being said. Of course, the text is also written in that accent so I only got so far with that tactic.
