Consequences
I enjoyed book two of the "Defenders of the Realm" series as much as the first book. The witches and the dragons started their second year at the Institute. Several characters were still experiencing the aftermath from their experiences in the first year, plus they had the added pressure of finding out who would be their fated mates when the year ended. The Chameleon Sprites were a delightful and creative addition to the worldbuilding. I liked the deeper exploration of the characters that were featured in this story. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. Zane Boyer's narration was delightful, and his performance enhanced the story's entertainment. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review which included my opinions.

Couldn’t take a break, got too caught up in the story
It was a very good story and I could identify with it. We all want to be happy, but what does that mean? I liked how the story developed, I held my breath the whole time. I love fantasy worlds and dreams, even if they don't necessarily match those of my friends. This story is for everyone who likes to dream and sometimes wants to forget reality.
The narrator is a bit slow and doesn't let enough emotion seep through in his reading

Traumatically Good
A beautiful tree & a seemingly fun learning adventure. There is definitely teen drama in response to missing friends. A yearly tradition at the institute goes wrong due to the previous abductions & traumas of the kids. Emotions run high as they struggle & plan for a way to save their friends who were kidnapped… again. The professor get a metaphorical slap in the face for not considering the emotional status of their students when continuing forward with normal school plans.
Then there’s a beauty of the fated mates ceremony with the wonder & hurt as something unexpected happens.
Love the message in this book that addresses past traumas & it’s written beautifully. The right amount of drama, the right amount of teen miscommunication, the secrets & nuances of the whole story work well. A great fantasy book. I definitely want to see what happened next.

Those chameleon sprites…yikes.
Wow, this book had me on edge, like you can’t trust anyone with chameleon sprites around. Gripping my seat through half the book, so stressful but sooo good! This author is great at grabbing your attention and keeping you guessing. Don’t pass on this series and don’t skip the novellas either, they are worth the read to fill in the gaps between books! This book is well written and has a fun storyline.
