Advances in technology were depicted in movies and cartoons including Star Trek which depicted tablet computers, James Bond, who used smart watches and smart phones, and the Jetsons, which depicted flying cars and innovative equipment. These technologies were conceptualized but not produced during that time. Humanity’s ability to innovate does not stay dormant when developing technology.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a developing technology affecting different aspects of life. Athletes benefit from AI in their training and development. AI has been studied in areas of healthcare and medical practice, including precision medicine, population health, and natural language processing (Kulkarni et al., 2020). AI began as a series of “if, then rules” and has advanced over several decades to include complex algorithms that perform similarly to the human brain. There are subfields in AI, akin to specialties in medicine, such as machine learning, deep learning, and computer vision (Kaul et al., 2020). Developments in the medical field are beneficial to the medical practitioners and patients. Concerns about AI include being self-aware, self-sufficient, and making decisions that can be detrimental to others. While AI can be beneficial in certain sectors, control over AI integrated platforms must be emphasized.
