About this listen

This entertaining companion to the massively popular history podcast tackles everything from Alexander the Great to Agatha Christie, the Wars of the Roses to Watergate—with a unique blend of wit, wisdom, and good old-fashioned banter

The Rest Is History podcast brilliantly distills major moments in human history, covering everything from the Trojan War to a historical ranking of the greatest dogs. Now, this official tie-in book brings the chart-topping podcast’s charms, offering listeners a fresh, wide-ranging tour of humanity’s essential, and essentially weird, moments, including:

- Did the Trojan War actually happen?

- What was the most disastrous party in history?

- Was Richard Nixon more like Caligula or Claudius?

- How did a hair appointment almost blow Churchill’s cover?

- Why did the Nazis believe they were descended from Atlantis?

Featuring an introduction from podcast hosts Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook, this book cleverly demonstrates that the past—from modern to ancient and every time in between—is both closer to us than we might realize and bafflingly strange, all at once. So run your Egyptian milk bath, strap up your best Spartan sandals, and prepare for a journey down the highways and byways of the human past.

Tom Holland is one of my favorite authors. He has written some of the best books on ancient history. After listening to this I will invest more time in their podcast.

The Rest is History

By Tom Holland & Dominic Sandbrook

Very interesting series of humorous snippets from many different historic events and people. Use caution in that some of the humor detracts from accuracy. But all you need is some common sense to separate the two.

This is just an incredibly interesting and entertaining book and an indispensable companion to the podcast. Hats off to the entire team of researchers, writers and producers for delivering so many hours of pleasurable listening.

History is fun!

The entire book is wonderful, but the chapter entitled 'The Real Da Vinci Code' is one of the funniest things I've listened to this year.

A renowned audiobook that transforms historical words into sound for your ears

Yes, yes, yes!! I am a huge fan of this podcast so it is such a delight to have the authors read this lovely little history snack (complete with musical interludes) genuinely interesting, funny and informative. A perfect listen.

HISTORY SNACK!

This audio book isn't all bad. Well the "humor" is all bed. 100%. I mean these guys are lame deluxe on the humor scale. 11 1/2 hours trying to be funny without a single success. Only making Pauly Shore and Martin Short seem funny by comparison. The reason it's not all bad is because there is a bit of history sprinkled in this book and history is interesting.

Tries Hard to be Funny, But Isn't

Love the podcast. I’m a premium subscriber. But this is a huge disappointment and it is a disservice to sell it to fans. It is fundamentally a kind of meh coffee table or bathroom reader of listicles that doesn’t work as an audio product at all.

This is a coffee table book and doesn’t work on audio, at all

The format of the two of them completing each other’s sentences felt like a note from the marketing department rather than something that actually serves the book. I’d rather listen to a normal podcast (or one of their fantastic books individually) than hear them take turns doing WatchMojo top 10 lists. It made the experience far worse than the actual substance of the stories should have been.

Fun, but the presentation is uncomfortable
