 Exley House had lain empty and alone for years since Mary died, as if it had chosen isolation for itself, as if occupants were an extravagance it could forgo. A warning message etched into a door, child-sized footprints on freshly painted floors, the contents of an old tattered diary, and photographs of children found during the property’s renovations would make anyone sell up and move.
