Critic reviews

"[Narrator Robert Ian] Mackenzie's soothing voice gently leads listeners through the characters' meandering thought processes: Does one own a painting found in a secret room of a newly purchased home? Do men have different conversations when women aren't present? Is it ethical to arrange for the seduction of a gold digger? Whatever the answers, Mackenzie's narration is purely delightful." This is one of his best!

I love them all, but there is something special about this one! Can't wait to see what happens next, especially with Bertie.

AMS-love his books

One of the sweetest things at the end of each of his books, is that Alexander McCall Smith includes a poem. The one at the end of this book was so sweet and so true, and so needed in life. If you do nothing else, listen, or read the poem at the end of the book.

As great and delightful as ever!

Ended up spending the whole day with my old friends in Edinburgh yesterday by listening to The Revolving Door of Life. What a tribute to friendship and love! Emotional reactions ranged from laughing out loud with tears rolling down my cheeks to very tender moments, feeling the depth of our shared humanity. I love how Alexander McCall Smith is able to convey his values in the story/conversations, and sometimes one sentence or description say as much as pages in a philosophy book. The narrator is amazing too and brings these characters that would jump off the page to life on another level.
On a sidenote, since the last installment of this series, I discovered Outlander and spent several months listening to book one to eight (Davina Porter is as superb a narrator as Robert Ian Mackenzie in my opinion, and Diana Gabaldon has created a most lovable group of characters as well.) This has deepened my understanding of this series of course, and Scotland would be on my bucket list now, if I had one ;-)

Another installment in the colorful characters at 44 Scotland Street! A brief taste of freedom for Bertie. Delightful as always from Alexander McCall Smith. Cant wait for the next one.

Better than the previous two or three

This one is better than the previous two books in the series. Not so far-fetched as unbelievable as the previous book. Story line has some unexpected happenings, almost as interesting as the first 3 books.

Warmth, laughter, and principles

I was disappointed at first when I began listening to this book, because it was not about the same characters I had enjoyed before. I forgot that, as I became engaged in the lives of the people at 44 Scotland St. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did. I wish I could tell Alexander McCall Smith how sincerely I love his writing. He seems to be able to enter into the minds of so many different kinds of people that it's almost as if he is multiple authors.. His use of language is marvelous, and the breath of his knowledge is prodigious.

great story telling

enjoyed the reading.
did get slow in spots that really had no baring on the story as a whole.
the accents were perfect in all the right places.

Not up to snuff

A lot of philosophical discussion. which would be interesting if there was some argument.
