About this listen

The untold story of William Haas, pioneering missionary to central Africa and founder of Baptist Mid-Missions.

In the early 1900s, a question loomed large: who would take the gospel to central Africa, one of the world’s last regions untouched by missions. Few people dared to explore this rugged frontier let alone bring the gospel. Central Africa’s untamed wildlife and virulent diseases brought the very real potential of death to outsiders.

Soft-spoken, gentle-spirited, and fragile in health, William was a very unlikely candidate to pioneer a mission work in this difficult place. But God loves to use those willing to trust Him with their lives. William found that he could rest his future in God’s hands and that—even when there is a cost to service—the reward far outweighs the cost.

William Haas was one of the unsung heroes of missionary history. He was a pioneer missionary in a part of the world that was very difficult to reach at that time. His ministry there didn’t last very long compared to many other missionaries, but in the relatively short time he served in central Africa, he had a tremendous impact. This excellently written biography does a good job of showing his successes and failures, his strengths and his weaknesses. The book also does a good job of describing his life and ministry without letting things drag; I typically get bored with many biographies but this one keeps me interested right to the end! If you like missionary biographies, you will be blessed and challenged by this one!

Well-written biography of an unsung hero of missions
