About this listen
After a harrowing escape from their first landfall in the southern lands and worse disasters in the city where they seek refuge, the crew of the Chathrand discover that the worst imaginable thing has happened: Arunis has stolen the Nilstone.
Now our heroes face a terrible choice. They can flee with the crew, and leave Arunis to do what he will - or they can pursue him into the wild, abandoning all but the slimmest chance of ever returning home, and travel the River of Shadows, a waterway rumored to be connected to the spirit realm. They are running out of time before Arunis masters the Nilstone - and unleashes the Swarm of Night into the world.

Story
The Imperial Merchant Ship Chathrand is the last of her kind. Six hundred years old, the secrets of her construction long forgotten, the massive vessel dwarfs every other sailing craft in the world. It is a palace with sails, a floating outpost of the Empire of Arqual. And it is on its most vital mission yet: to deliver a young woman whose marriage will seal the peace between Arqual and its mortal enemy, the secretive Mzithrin Empire.

Story
Kandri Hinjuman was never meant to be a soldier. His brother Mektu was never meant for this world. Rivals since childhood, they are drafted into a horrific war led by a madwoman-Prophet, and survive each day only by hiding their disbelief. Kandri is good at blending in, but Mektu is hopeless: impulsive, erratic - and certain that a demon is stalking him. Is this madness or a second sense? Either way, Kandri knows that Mektu's antics will land them both in early graves. But all bets are off when the brothers' simmering feud explodes into violence, and holy blood is spilled.

At once an incredible adventure narrative and a penetrating biographical portrait, Egan's book tells the remarkable untold story behind Edward Curtis's iconic photographs, following him throughout Indian country from desert to rainforest as he struggled to document the stories and rituals of more than eighty tribes. Even with the backing of Theodore Roosevelt and J.P. Morgan, it took tremendous perseverance. The undertaking changed him profoundly, from detached observer to outraged advocate.

Story
When Michael Moorcock began chronicling the adventures of the albino sorcerer Elric, last king of decadent Melniboné, and his sentient vampiric sword, Stormbringer, he set out to create a new kind of fantasy adventure, one that broke with tradition and reflected a more up-to-date sophistication of theme and style. The result was a bold and unique hero: a rock-and-roll antihero who would channel all the violent excesses of the '60s into one enduring archetype.

Rap and Inos were comfortable, secure, and truly happy, raising their family in the little backwater kingdom of Krasnegar, well removed from the hurly-burly of great affairs.... Refreshingly vibrant book
I am always looking for a good book, for myself and my teenage boys. Redick has delivered another master piece in the River of Shadows. Redick has found a way to limit profanity and sex, while keeping the story fresh and exhilarating. This story continues the tail well and I am looking forward to book 4!

Expectedly Fantastic
Michael Page is, as usual, just a fantastic reader. He keeps all the voices the same over all three books, and considering these have been coming out once a year, it's just an amazing attention to detail that is the hallmark of a class A narrator.
Now, reviewing the third book of a series seems sort of silly. Either the first two books have hooked you, or they haven't. I suppose this would be for those of you who are on the fence, really. And if you are, I encourage you to continue on.
I don't wish to give anything away, so I'll be general and say that this book has a lot of sorrow, a lot of humor, a lot of things we've been waiting for, and many things we haven't; the scope of magic increases; the world expands; and our concept of what is happening becomes clearer. All in all, it's an excellent addition to the series, and the end makes it far easier to wait for the final installment than the previous book's cliffhanger.

A fantastic book in every way!
Michael Page has become one of my favorite narrators! He has a variety of voices and makes character distinction easy. He also brings them to life in a way seldom found in other audio books. He is also consistent with the voices over all three books. That seems to be something that same narrators loose over time.
The story itself is of course fantastic! Epic fantasy without being tedious. Robert V.S. Redick breathes new life in the genre. The characters are ones you can connect with and cheer on. I have listened to several epic fantasy series and this has become one of my favorites!! More please!
