About this listen
An outcast girl looking to belong discovers a secret doorway to other realms in a thrilling portal fantasy novel for middle-grade listeners.
When twelve-year-old Adeline Perle's transient military family finally plants roots in an old, creaky mansion - Cannondale - the girl craves to build the lasting friendships that she, as a constant outsider, never had.
At last, on the cusp of bonding with a new group of affable teens on Cannondale's grounds, Adeline discovers an unusual treasure behind a secret door, unveiling portals to extraordinary realms where she is confronted with disappearing creatures and magical people, good and evil, and a boy who's desperate to help her find her way back home.
But not all friends are as they seem. Some will go to any length to get what they want, including a secret Adeline does not even know she possesses. It is a secret so important, all the magic in the universe is at stake. Wars have been waged over it, and Adeline finds herself right in the middle of it all. She must overcome all inhibitions and face her greatest fears not only to survive but - after a lifetime of wanting - to find her place and way home.

Story
The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers, and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them. Everything was perfect - except for the misty Marshlands to the north, which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Anyone sensible knew that the Ickabog was just a myth to scare children into behaving. But the funny thing about myths is that sometimes they take on a life of their own.

A wonderful story set in a world of surprises
Stephanie Brick has written a wonderful story of adventure and fantasy for young adults in her debut novel. Adeline is a winsome heroine who lives through breathless encounters with new lands and new peoples, in a story full of marvelous discoveries and recurring peril. This novel will draw in young adults and older ones too, and it will leave you with lots of pleasure as you reflect on amazing moments in a completely new land. The reader on Audible adds to the impact with her energetic performance of the story.

A magical adventure that captivates young minds!
My 8-year-old daughter absolutely loves this book! If your children enjoy the magical worlds of "Alice in Wonderland" or the "Narnia" series, this story is a perfect fit. The author's descriptive language vividly brings every scene to life, transporting you to another world. Megan's animated narration draws you in, making you experience fear, sadness, bravery, and wonder alongside the characters as you journey through the tale.
The plot is filled with exciting twists and turns that kept my daughter on the edge of her seat, eager to find out what happens next at the end of each chapter. This book is a delightful adventure for kids aged 8-12, and it’s a fantastic choice for family listening. I highly recommend it!

A fun read drawing you into a world of fantasy
The Secret Doors of Cannondale was such a fun book, drawing you into a world of mystery with a lot of unexpected turns and many adventures along the way. Adeline was such a relatable main character that I found myself drawn into her story from the very first page. Such an intriguing world of magic and interesting friends and villains that makes you feel like you are standing right next to Adeline experiencing all of her adventures every step of the way. The narrator was really good, making all the characters come alive with their different personalities. For a story with many parts of danger, excitement, and fun twists along the way, I highly recommend it for both kids or adults who want to bring their imagination to life as you step into a new world!

Like stepping into a Studio Ghibli film
The Secret Doors of Cannondale was such a fantastic, delightful, and adventurous read. Anyone with a love for studio Ghibli films like Spirited Away or Castle in the Sky will absolutely love this book. This book really captures the same energy, charm, and innocence as a Hiyao Miyazaki film. There is never a dull moment, and the rich detail really brings the story to life. This page-turner book flows seamlessly, and the ending of every chapter leaves you excited for what’s next. Adeline, the main character, is charming, relatable, and easy to love.
I loved discovering the twists and turns and mysteries of this remarkable magical world and feeling like I was really there. I’m positive that anyone with a sense of adventure and a love for imaginative, mysterious, magical new worlds will think so too.
