About this listen

Santa Vittoria is a fictional town, still remote from the rest of war-torn Italy, where the citizens, led by their wine-loving mayor Bombolini, scheme and plot to prevent the Germans from locating and looting the town's only treasure - its fabulous wine cellars.

A best seller and the inspiration for the famous film starring Anthony Quinn, this warm, rich novel has already drawn thousands upon thousands into the exuberant and perilous life of Santa Vittoria and its affirmation of the fundamental dignity of man.

Masterpiece!!! Five Star all the way!

Absolutely loved every word of this story!!! In the same league with The Book Thief. It is a lighter hearted story of an Italian village being occupied toward end of WW2. Very heartwarming, funny, deep - with very little violence. Awesome characters. Fantastic narrator. Superb writing. A diamond. Highest recommendation!!!

Rivetingly Entertaining

I saw the movie as a kid an enjoyed it, but never read the book. The book is great. It was obviously far more detailed than the film and had many different twists and outcomes. The characters were compelling, interesting and believable. The narration was phenomenal and easy to listen to. I also learned a lot about Italy and the Italian mindset. Highly recommended!

Watch the movie instead

This is the rare occasion when the movie is much better than the book. Save yourself eleven hours and seek out the film.

Best Narrator

Literally forgot the narrator was there - best I’ve ever heard. Creativity and consistency kept the story completely cohesive. I always knew which character was speaking because he was so distinct and consistent.
