Eye Opening

This is such an important book. So many caretakers become sicker than the ones they started off caring for because of the stress, emotional upset, and hard, exhausting work it is caring for someone. This book helps you find ways to reduce stress and work calmness and patience into your daily schedule. It highlights the possibility of the joy you can receive by giving of yourself without burning yourself out—the importance of self-care. Highly recommend.

A focus on the ever-overlooked self-care

It is no secret that caring for those in the throes of dementia and similar instances of cognitive decline is no cakewalk. In fact, it can be one of the most debilitating and emotionally draining experiences imaginable. However, like most challenges in our lives, there are many, many ways to not just cope, but empower ourselves to care in such profound ways that can truly help the physical and emotional stresses of ourselves, and then inadvertently, those we care for. Lara West exemplifies how to do this perfectly in her title that focuses on bringing about a proper understanding of the cognitive decline pertaining to such conditions, excellent and effective caregiving, and most importantly and my fave takeaway: consistent self-care, which provides the aforementioned and inadvertent care for others.
