About this listen
"This important book on social revolution in America in the late '60s has been recommended for anyone who is puzzled by increasing evidences of unrest in urban ghettos, threats implied in Black Power slogans, the sense of futility and failure...arising from the Black...population." (Chicago Sun Times)
Here is the Dick Gregory (1932 -2017) of the devastating wit and pointed humor known to millions. Here, too, is the impassioned social reformer, speaking out on such subjects as respect for law, order, and justice; violence and police brutality; the breakdown of Negro families; civil disobedience; and other vital issues.
"There is a great social revolution going on in America today," Dick Gregory declares. "And the wonderful thing about this revolution is that it is not Black against White. It is simply right against wrong."
"I never learned hate at home, or shame. I had to go to school for that." (Dick Gregory)

Story
Growing up poor in a St. Louis African American community, Dick Gregory (b. 1932) gained his improvisational skills trading insults on neighborhood streets. He honed his ironic barbs in Chicago's black nightclubs before crossing over to mainstream venues. His success at the Playboy Club led to bookings at nightspots around the country, network television exposure, and a recording contract. His first book, From the Back of the Bus, offered satiric observations on race in America in the midst of the civil rights era.

America’s backstory is a whitewashed mythology implanted in our collective memory. It should come as no surprise that the dominant narrative of American history is blighted with errors and oversights—after all, history books were written by white men with their perspectives at the forefront. It could even be said that the devaluation and erasure of the Black experience is as American as apple pie. In Black AF History, Michael Harriot presents a more accurate version of American history.

This is an easily digestible argument about what rights we have, what rights Republicans are trying to take away, and how to stop them. Mystal explains how to protect the rights of women and people of color instead of cowering to the absolutism of gun owners and bigots. He explains the legal way to stop everything from police brutality to political gerrymandering, just by changing a few judges and justices. He strips out all of the fancy jargon conservatives like to hide behind and lays bare the truth of their project to keep America forever tethered to its slaveholding past.

Based on seven years of ground-breaking research and hundreds of interviews, I Thought It Was Just Me shines a long-overdue light on an important truth: Our imperfections are what connect us to each other and to our humanity. Our vulnerabilities are not weaknesses; they are powerful reminders to keep our hearts and minds open to the reality that we're all in this together.

Story
The Strange Death of Europe is a highly personal account of a continent and culture caught in the act of suicide. Declining birth rates, mass immigration, and cultivated self-distrust and self-hatred have come together to make Europeans unable to argue for themselves and incapable of resisting their own comprehensive alteration as a society and an eventual end.

Story
Humorist and comedian Dick Gregory mounted a pointed write-in campaign for the US presidency in 1968. Far from the sort of candidacy mounted primarily for entertainment value (such as Pat Paulsen's), Gregory used his as a vehicle for advancing a national dialogue and awareness of racial issues, and eventually garnered over 47,000 votes. This book served as his campaign platform and manifesto, mixing straight talk with humorous interludes. A fascinating and particularly accurate touchstone for the zeitgeist of America in 1968.
