About this listen

Inspired by the true story of Colonel Jimmy Doolittle’s raid on Japan in 1942, The Shangri-La Raiders is the next stunning installment of the When Heroes Flew WWII historical fiction series.

“Well-researched and well-told.” (Mark Sullivan, USA Today best-selling author of The Last Green Valley and Beneath a Scarlet Sky)

This gripping novel follows an American bomber crew through their secretive training, a harrowing raid on Japan, and on their desperate journey through occupied China to Chungking, the seat of the country’s wartime government.

The crew, along with an American missionaries’ daughter whom they’ve rescued, must evade the Japanese occupiers every step of the way. And amidst all the horror and turmoil of war, a romance blossoms between the rescued woman and the crew’s pilot.

2022 MWSA Gold Medal Winner, When Heroes Flew: The Shangri-La Raiders is a captivating tale of bravery, determination and an unlikely love that will leave you hooked until the very end.

Praise for The Shangri-La Raiders:

"Riveting! This fact-based story will place you in the cockpit of a B-25 bomber on one of the most celebrated raids of World War II, living facets of it that are so little known." (Lee Jackson, author of After Dunkirk)

“Another clever mixture of fact and fiction....Bernard’s flair for bringing history alive is on full display." (Steve Berry, New York Times best-selling author of The Kaiser's Web)

Buzz Bernard has done it again and made WWII history not just fascinating but highly entertaining. Until I read his book When Heroes Flew, I didn’t read historical war history, in fact I avoided it, but the blurb for the book caught my interest and having read it I was hooked on his story telling. Well, while When Heroes Flew was pretty darn awesome, The Shangri-La Raiders is hands down a hit. Following a B-25 crew through their experiences of flying ASW off the Oregon coast to becoming one of the crews in the Doolittle Raider group was addicting. The way Buzz weaves the real history of the events into this story makes it impossible to put down. If you enjoy WWII stories or want to experience a story of the first noncarrier aircraft to be launched from a carrier deck this is for you. I received an Advance Reader Copy and chose to provide this review.

Update 5/16/2023

Recently I received a review copy of The Shangri-La Raiders audiobook from the publisher. While I stand by my original review, listening to Colin Ricks bring this story to life with the various character voices and his expert storytelling skills added a new dimension to a story that I loved when I read it. Additionally, listening to the audiobook brought out story elements that I may have missed in my reading or forgotten in the past year.

Excellent story of the Doolittle Raid

I always wondered about the details around this raid. They were kept classified for so long, and it was chilling to find out what faced some of these brave heroes. As always, Buzz Bernard does his research deeply and gives us the details couched in a plot and characters that hold our attention. I so appreciate his ability to balance the action and military history with just enough romance and no graphic, gratuitous sex. The author is a class act and manages to hold our interest without that, moving the story along with realistic dialogue and relatable characters. This series just gets better with every title!

Satisfying and informative
