Living A Meaningful Life is a series for adults and teens of all ages. Book 10 of the series, "The Substitute," is a very amusing, inspiring, and touching installment which moves the series deeper into allowing the listener to experience the very deep, complex, and meaningful relationship between father and son. The themes are still very much about sacrificing to do what is right, but also shows us what a loving parent and child relationship can look like. This is a particularly fun and amusing installment, and Rudy does not disappoint.

As any parent can attest to, sometimes your children can sign you up for some wild things. In this case, Rudy reacts on the fly as the school is suddenly left without a principal. How hard can it be going from two full-time jobs to three? Any parent can handle the responsibilities of a high school full of kids, right? Our narrator finds out the hard way what life as a principal is all about.

Using his own brand of compassion, our narrator slides into yet another role he didn’t ask for. Showing readers the power of time, a caring spirit, and a simple lunch. Author Brian Hunter throws another curve ball as our characters are expected to navigate these challenges in stride. Maintaining composure, extracting a few laughs, and always spreading love, our narrator continues to exude what it means to live a meaningful life.

Book after book, Hunter portrays town catastrophes, hardships, and gapping losses. And yet, routinely our characters navigate them with such grace and kindness that readers can’t help but feel impacted by the events within. “The Substitute” is no different, as Rudy continues to play a large role in this read, we encounter the navigational boundaries Rudy, and his father, have put in place to maintain necessary relationships and love. Providing a beacon for change, Rudy and his father continue to show their community and readers what it means to live meaningfully.

After each book in this series, I’m always left feeling ready to make a difference. Have that lunch with the struggling kid, read the poem someone hands you, show someone you care about them. It’s always the simple things, but Hunter once again shows how those are the things that really mean the most.
