About this listen

A story that illuminates the dark corners of creative endeavor in which inspiration, no longer an elusive, spritely muse, turns deadly and begins stalking the artist. In this gritty, poignant novel, the life of an alcoholic artist and author, Aiden, collides headlong with that of a serial murderer. The artist fights a serious brain infection and struggles to hide his addictions while holding his family together. The wall between reality and imagination comes crashing down when psychopathic Frederick invades Aiden's life, with a horrific lust for violence against young women. The artist's world careens out of control toward pure terror.

What made the experience of listening to The Surgeon's Mate the most enjoyable?

Allen Clark's narration immerses the reader in the world's he creates. The pace and tone are mesmerizing and keeps you glued to the story.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot keeps you rooting for the protagonist, empathizing with his struggle while you jeer the antagonist in his retro world of dark impulses.

What does Alan M. Clark bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narration, Allen Clark's voice, lends an authenticity to the work that I feel only the author could have, whether it be his slight southern drawl or the intimacy he has with the work, it is obvious that these are characters with which he is acutely and innately familiar.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It is a long read, being over nine hours, but yes, the desire was there to listen to it all in one sitting, just not the opportunity and I had to listen to it over the course of a few nights.

Any additional comments?

Great style, pace and voice. I would recommend The Surgeons Mate: A Dismemoir to all who love to get lost in a good story.
