About this listen

Read by the Author for his son, nephew, Godson, and any child that needs a laugh.

It has been over a year since the last big mystery was solved, and now with the two clubs joined together, everything should be smooth sailing. The imperially mandated diverse members of the Detective and Mystery Club are at the height of their popularity, but with this increase in responsibility the members must find a way to balance school life, club work, and their own personal relationships. At the same time, they are still cadets at the empire’s flagship species integrated military high school, so their ability to work together is being scrutinized by everyone around them. Hormonal teenagers with access to social pressure, relationship drama and laser rifles? What could go wrong! At least one thing.

The mousy olive-skinned human girl, Karel, is doing her best to be both a friend and pseudo sisters with the two red headed Hankuk girls of the group, Nichol and Janah. The three girls are doing great at school, and seemingly even better at love with their respective boyfriends. Said love interests, the Nipon boys Francis and Luke, are giving their all to secure the club’s success while their tall blond and dashing Zhongguo pal, Kenny, is busy becoming a star both on and off the rifle range. Of course, they do not have to do it alone, with their trusty club mascots SD, the genetically engineer Space Dog, and Huntington, their Space Cat, adding much needed merchandising potential to their group endeavors.

However, not everyone is so happy at the school, with one outsider in particular, Woody, trying to find support and friendship in a place that will lead to direct confrontation with the Detective and Mystery Club. Do not feel too bad for him. We would not have a story otherwise! Love, teenage angst, prom dances, explosions, and something called a Zeebo awaits in the third, and most exciting, chapter of the Space Dog series!

I think after the first two books set up the ideas, world, and characters, the third one finally puts all of it together in a way that feels like a payoff. It is nice that the characters get room to grow even more, while the themes of the story get more intense. It's almost like the story grew up with the characters. The same perspective shift from the last two books is here too with a new twist that ties in nicely to the plot and other characters' stories. Also, after some of the rougher delivery by the author in his last two books, this feel like a real improvement with him getting much more confident in the role. I would recommend it to Sci-fi Romance fans, as long as the subjects of terrorism are not too intense for you. I would say, most 13 year olds should be more than fine with it.

A Sci-fi Mystery Romance with interesting characters who grow through their flaws
