About this listen

A “masterful” (The American Spectator) history of the iconic attorney Clarence Darrow and the famous Scopes Monkey Trial, from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Russia Hoax and Witch Hunt.

Nearly a century ago, famed liberal attorney Clarence Darrow defended schoolteacher John Scopes in a blockbuster legal proceeding that brought the attention of the entire country to the small town of Dayton, Tennessee. Darrow’s seminal defense of freedom of speech helped form the legal bedrock on which our civil liberties depend today. Expertly researched, “colorful, and dramatic” (Publishers Weekly), The Trial of the Century calls upon our past to unite Americans in the defense of the free exchange of ideas, especially in this divided time.

This is a well known trial, has been in books, plays, movies, and television. I did not think anything new would be divulged, but I was wrong. There are some very interesting tidbits that make the listen fascinating. There are also some very interesting similarities to a recent trial in which the defense was not allowed witnesses, may be another book from GJ. His narration is excellent save one big--well for me--problem. It is zo-ology not zoo-ology--only two o's.

Well written and well narrated

Great use of primary sources to put the reader in the moment. It jumped around chronologically at the beginning, then the epilogue got a little soap-boxy about CRT which seemed out of place, and kind of shoe horned in. Aside from those 2 complaints it was a good book overall.

Great bit of unknown history for many.

I liked everything -- so very interesting. Now I want to read Inheret the Wind and Clarence Darrow's biography.

What a story -- truly The Trial of the Century.

I was very disappointed that find out that Gregg Jarrett doesn’t believe in the Biblical six day creation.

Worldly creation view by author

The speech pattern of the reader is so over-the-top affected it's nearly impossible to listen to for any length of time. I bought this without listening to the sample, and that's on me. Had I tried the sample, I would have passed on the book.

Great subject matter, poor performance
