The grid is an accident of history and of culture, in no way intrinsic to how we produce, deliver and consume electrical power. Yet this is the system the United States ended up with, a jerry-built structure now so rickety and near collapse that a strong wind or a hot day can bring it to a grinding halt. The grid is now under threat from a new source: renewable and variable energy, which puts stress on its logics as much as its components.

Without degrees in finance or six-figure salaries, Steve and Annette have created a comfortable, debt-free life for themselves and their children.

When you turn on the tap or twist the cap, you might not give a second thought to where your drinking water comes from. But how it gets from the ground to your glass is far more complex than you might think. Is it safe to drink tap water? Should you feel guilty buying bottled water? Is your water vulnerable to terrorist attacks? With springs running dry and reservoirs emptying, where is your water going to come from in the future? In Drinking Water, Duke professor James Salzman shows how drinking water highlights the most pressing issues of our time.

A rarity in survival guides
Where does The Ultimate Suburban Survivalist Guide rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
There are financial guides that will help you protect your money and there are guides that will help you prepare for the end of the world. But now there is a guide that will help you find a healthy balance between disaster preparation and living your life. One of the things that make this book different is has two sections. One section will help organize your finances and help you save money while still living a reasonable lifestyle. The second section moves into helping you prepare for the most common natural and manmade disasters but in a reasonable manner that doable for the average suburbanite.
What does Scott Peterson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He includes true stories of people who lives have been changed by disaster and examines why they survived and how you can too.

Great book, terrible narration
What made the experience of listening to The Ultimate Suburban Survivalist Guide the most enjoyable?
All the content in this book is great, but the narrator is SO mechanical, and often the subject matter is in list form (great to read, but to to hear) that it becomes agonizing to sit thru. If it weren't for my interest in the subject and lack of time to read, I would have just bought the book, so I'd have it for reference later.
How could the performance have been better?
Get a narrator that can read in a less mechanical fashion.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
NA
