 Two years have passed since Hildie's little angel, Joy, was kidnapped. Life has returned to normal, and Hildie and Ben couldn't be happier. The holidays are fast approaching and one morning before school Hildie compliments Joy on how she has grown into a lovely young woman. "It's no wonder you have several beaus pursuing you!" Joy smiles a bashful smile and lets her mother know that the only boy she's interested in is Billy. They go on to discuss that Miss Benton, her schoolteacher, is going to teach them several dances. Hildie tells Joy what a lucky girl she is, remembering that she didn't enjoy those privileges when she lived in an orphanage.

Joy is quiet for a moment, and then asks, "Do you think Darla is learning how to dance in her orphanage?" Needless to say, this subject catches Hildie completely off-guard. Joy continues to wonder if she has changed by now...and asks if they could go and pay her a visit. Hildie is quite shocked and isn't sure what to say. Joy tells Hildie that most of the children at school have a brother or sister...and she wishes she had one.

Hildie has a lot to think about and wonders what Ben will say when she brings up the subject. What would happen if they brought Darla back to live with them? Would she be nice or would she still hold all the resentment that got her where she was now? Hester Newson would be released from jail in another year and what problems would that create to find her precious Darla living with Joy and Hildie?
