1900s Society

The history written in this novel is narrated very well. The narrator uses an engaging tone that it make feel as if the story is being told to you specifically. The language used is engaging. When you listen to the story, you realize that all social status had their ups and downs. I was able to understand the fortunes and misfortunes people experiences when trying to find their loved due to their social status. It is also very clear the appearance and status was valued by those in power to the point of compromising the family's well being to an extent.

Captivating!

This was my first Eliza Hawthorne's book, and won't be my last. This is the first book in the Shadows of the Past series, a historical narrative and true crime mystery about the unsolved disappearance of Dorothy Arnold. This series is original and captivating. This is a gripping and interesting retelling of the story. Bruce Cannon did an excellent job bringing this story to life. Looking forward to listening to The Silent Witness, the next book in the series. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

As a guy who’s into true crime and historical oddities, this one had me locked in. I hadn’t heard about this case before, and now I can’t stop thinking about it. The pacing kept things moving without losing depth, and the narrator added just the right edge. It’s the kind of story that makes you dig deeper after it ends—because the questions just don’t stop.
