1900s Society

The history written in this novel is narrated very well. The narrator uses an engaging tone that it make feel as if the story is being told to you specifically. The language used is engaging. When you listen to the story, you realize that all social status had their ups and downs. I was able to understand the fortunes and misfortunes people experiences when trying to find their loved due to their social status. It is also very clear the appearance and status was valued by those in power to the point of compromising the family's well being to an extent.

Captivating!

This was my first Eliza Hawthorne's book, and won't be my last. This is the first book in the Shadows of the Past series, a historical narrative and true crime mystery about the unsolved disappearance of Dorothy Arnold. This series is original and captivating. This is a gripping and interesting retelling of the story. Bruce Cannon did an excellent job bringing this story to life. Looking forward to listening to The Silent Witness, the next book in the series. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

classic mystery

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but The Vanishing Heiress totally delivered. Dorothy Arnold’s story is both eerie and fascinating—it feels like a mix of true crime and classic mystery. The narration was spot-on, making it easy to get lost in the story during my dog walks with Sansa (who appreciated the extra-long strolls!). It’s well-researched and makes you feel like you’re stepping back into a different time. I even paused to think, "How did this case stay unsolved?" If you’re into historical mysteries, you’ll love this. A great mix of suspense and substance

Mystery that keeps you thinking

I love listening to audiobooks while working from home, and The Vanishing Heiress was a perfect pick. Dorothy Arnold’s disappearance is both creepy and fascinating—it’s like a mix of true crime and classic mystery. The narration made it easy to get lost in the story, and the historical details really brought the Gilded Age to life. I also liked how the book compared old investigative techniques to modern ones, which made the case feel even more puzzling. If you’re into unsolved mysteries with lots of twists, this is a great one to listen to.
