About this listen

Venice, 1576. Five years after the defeat of the Ottoman Empire at the Battle of Lepanto, a ship steals unnoticed into Venice bearing a deadly cargo. A man, more dead than alive, disembarks and staggers into Piazza San Marco. He brings a gift to Venice from Constantinople. Within days the city is infected with bubonic plague - and the Turkish sultan has his revenge.

But the ship also holds a secret stowaway - Feyra, a young and beautiful harem doctor fleeing a future as the sultan's concubine. Only her wits and medical knowledge keep her alive as the plague ravages Venice.

In despair, the doge commissions the architect Andrea Palladio to build the greatest church of his career - an offering to God so magnificent that Venice will be saved. But Palladio's life is in danger too, and it will require all the skills of Annibale Cason, the city's finest plague doctor, to keep him alive. What Cason had not counted on was meeting Feyra, who is now under Palladio's protection - an impossible woman whose medical skills and determination are matched only by his own.

From Marina Fiorato, author of the acclaimed historical novelThe Glassblower of Murano, comes a triumphant return to historical Venice with The Venetian Bargain.

Amazing Story and Great Narration

This was an amazing story. It was based on historical fact of the plague but woven with fiction to keep the reader enthralled.

The narrator has an amazing dialect for all characters.

100% recommend.

History Repeats

History does repeat and evidently we have learned nothing. The current pandemic was handled no better this time as it was in the 1500's. I was angered reading this because the same mistakes and conspiracies were made by ignorant people and leaders.

Brilliant profound artistic novel HF

Stunning brilliant deep story!!! This author incredibly talented!!! A love story intertwined. Themes of medicine, pandenic, conflict between two nations. Best historical fiction available. Many themes relevant to our times, how history repeats. Narrator perfect, excellent. Grateful I found this story and gave it enough time.

Good

A very interesting story. Excellent narration, though slowly read. I sped it up for a faster pace. The staccato pauses were still there, but it made it more pleasant to listen to.

Annoying Narrator

While the story was decent the narrator spoke with a strange staccato cadence croaking

What a great book

This was such a great read. Maybe it was because we too are experiencing a plague, and it made me really think. I enjoyed this book so so much.

Keeps you interested

Even though the romance part of the story is quite predictable, the rest is very entertaining. I just wish that the reader had informed herself as to the correct pronunciation of Italian words and names.

Magnificent

Graciously and delicately wound story in both Eastern and Western, modern and classic styles. Delicious language beautifully performed. I was delighted from the first to the last word.
