About this listen

By universal consensus, there’s only one exhibition worth seeing at this year’s Venice Biennale. Giuditta Cancellieri’s Il Timore di Dio, six paintings of something as yet undisclosed. Don’t bother buying tickets, though. A court order means no one’s getting in, not even the artist’s closest associates.

The city’s been filling with felons. Most observers don’t think that’s an accident. At least one rumor suggests the paintings depict Italy’s most powerful gangsters, or its politicians, in compromising positions. And there are more startling conjectures. Yet for all anyone really knows, the six canvases may be completely blank.

In any case, Signorina Cancellieri is no ordinary artist. A 25-year-old AIDS victim from one of the toughest districts of Naples, she’s also closely linked to one of MI7’s oldest enemies, Constantius Sopa.

As the temperature rises to boiling point, MI7 Agent Gavin Freedman is dispatched from London to find out just what is going on.

Excellent!

international-crime-and-mystery, espionage

***** Best spy vs spy I've read in a while! The publisher's blurb covers the basics regarding the art exhibition, some of the players, the criminal elements, the intent for Venice to secede, and the involvement by British intelligence. What it doesn't convey is the very noir tone, the ongoing sense of anticipation, twists and switchbacks in the plot, and the extensive due diligence in the investigation. I loved it and was impressed!
Jack Wynter is a narrator I haven't heard before but his clear speech and comfortable delivery combined with the ability to differentiate the characters is world class.

Excellent listen

This review is not a book report, but rather a brief report of the aftermath, the affect, the feelings and impressions I experienced at listening. The author's skill were amplified by narrator's delivery. I hope I don't insult the author by saying this book reminded me of a le Carre' work. Good character development without being obvious or overstated and the intricate plot was believable and the ending intense. I listened to it again to catch any nuances which I may have missed during my first listen... and I will likely listen to it again because I enjoy a professional and cohesive production. A good and entertaining story.

This is a well crafted story with an interesting group of characters embedded in a web of Espionage and intrigue and as a
bonus Venice is an important element in the entire enterprise.

With a good Narrator the package is complete and the listener has an opportunity to be entertained.

High energy and unexpected twists

I really enjoyed the characters that the author made come to life with his great narrative. The narrator did a great job with the many different roles he filled so well.

There was just the right amount of action verses dialog, either of too much makes the story move along slowly. This was so well written and narrated that I think I only stopped listening for a few hours before I had to start it up again to find out what was going to happen next .
