When twelve-year-old Yvonne learns that bossy Auntie MaKhumalo is visiting her in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, she fears for her freedom. Auntie argues that Yvonne should go to an awful boarding school instead of the secondary school of her dreams. To convince Mama to send Auntie away, Yvonne begins digging up her auntie's secret past.
When Yvonne discovers a childhood photo in which Auntie wore a tattered dress while Mama wore a fancy one, she suspects her grandparents treated Auntie poorly. She browses family albums for more photos of Auntie. When she doesn’t find any, she grows more suspicious. She’s determined to find proof that Auntie isn't a good person but instead finds out that Auntie had horrible experiences when she was young. Despite her limited freedom to explore, Yvonne must hunt for the truth to learn to love unconditionally.
