About this listen

"The story of the day, of 9/11 itself, is best told in the voices of 9/11," said Miles Kara, a retired Army colonel and an investigator for the September 11 Commission, in a recent New York Times report.

Included here is a selection of recordings of Federal Aviation Administration, Defense Department, and American Airlines communications from September 11, 2001. You will hear air traffic controllers, military aviation officers, airline and fighter jet pilots, as well as two of the hijackers, during two hours of that historic morning.

Transcripts and some of the recordings have been released previously, but not the complete "audio monograph", as it was described by the September 11 Commission. The recordings were originally intended to be part of the Commissions' 2004 report on the terrorist attacks, but were not ready in time for a legal review before the Commission finished its work. They have now been released in their entirety.

Leaves an impression forever

This will leave a lasting impression on anyone that hears it. What the airlines and control towers where going through. How important it is to communicate with others immediately, including the media who got the word out that there is no good outcome to these hijacked planes and those on board had nothing to lose in fighting back. To all of those who were lost too soon - God Bless!

Amazing

What an incredible collection of audio from the professionals at the FAA and NORAD who witnessed the events of 9/11 through their headsets! Very compelling.

The Scariest recording I have ever listened to

Sobering, intense, terrifying. VERY hard to listen to, but something that puts a human face on the events of 9/11 in a way that books, newspapers, magazines, movies or television cannot.

It added to my appreciation for the heroes and martyrs of that day. No matter how uncomfortable you feel while listening to this, it is but a drop in the ocean compared to how the participants and their families must feel.

Really puts you in the middle of the event.

Sobering

Not for the faint of heart. US air traffic control did quite well that day.

I remember

I just relived that day.
My wife and I were coming back from Jamaica. It was the 10th of September. We had stopped in Florida to transfer planes, then were supposed to head to Dallas (at 6pm?) and then on to Oregon. Our flight was delayed repeatedly. I sat next to the pilot, at the gate, and asked him what was going on. He said he wasn't sure, but he thought it might be something to do with the plane. The entire flight crew waited with the passengers at the gate. We all wondered what was going on.
I think it must've been around 10 pm that we finally were okay to get on the plane. We were given the option to stay in Florida, or continue on to Dallas. Our luggage was headed west, so we stayed with it.
We landed at Dallas and were given a bus ride to a hotel for the night. In the flight there we were told that the airline would provide rooms at the airport hotel, then send us on to Portland in the afternoon.
I woke up feeling that something was off. I remember turning on CNN just in time to watch a replay of the first plane going in to the tower. The announcer interrupted the commentary to show a live shot of the second plane going in.
My wife and I sat on the bed, too shocked to speak. We held hands and watched, as the towers collapsed.
I don't remember much from our trip to Jamaica. We had pictures, I'm not sure where they went. I think the flight to Florida was nice. The airlines offered us coupons for discounted meals and airfare, if we wanted to fly with them in the future.
It took us almost two weeks to get back to Oregon.
I started to tense up when the live audio began. The tears started shortly after that. I guess you never get over certain events. Life happens, but some things stick with you.

wow

It's amazing that everyone stayed so calm.
The silences are more heartbreaking than the words.
