About this listen

This program includes a bonus conversation with the authors, Alyson Richman and Lauren Willig.

The next powerful audiobook from the author of The Two-Family House, about two sisters working in a WWII armory, each with a deep secret.

Two estranged sisters, raised in Brooklyn and each burdened with her own shocking secret, are reunited at the Springfield Armory in the early days of WWII. While one sister lives in relative ease on the bucolic armory campus as an officer’s wife, the other arrives as a war widow and takes a position in the armory factories as a “soldier of production”. Resentment festers between the two, and secrets are shattered when a mysterious figure from the past reemerges in their lives.

Praise for The Wartime Sisters:

"One of my favorite books of the year." (Fiona Davis, national best-selling author of The Dollhouse and The Masterpiece)

"Loigman’s strong voice and artful prose earn her a place in the company of Alice Hoffman and Anita Diamant, whose readers should flock to this wondrous new book." (Pam Jenoff, New York Times best-selling author of The Orphan’s Tale)

"The Wartime Sisters shows the strength of women on the home front: to endure, to fight, and to help each other survive.” (Jenna Blum, New York Times and international best-selling author of The Lost Family and Those Who Save Us)

I love the book. It was great. But it was so frustrating to hear the reader mess up the Jewish accent and mispronounce Hebrew words and not grab the concept of that. I would much rather they have had a reader who understands the language. It really took away from the book for me and it was like nails on a blackboard. It was very distracting. Otherwise the book was fantastic!

Great book but the reader does not have the knowledge to read the parts of the people with an accent

While the history within the boom was enjoyable the jumping between characters timelines got confusing at times.

Aside from the fact that one of the main characters worked in a munitions factory, there was very little about "wartime."
My biggest objection, though, was to the narrator, who had no knowledge whatsoever of the Yiddish, which she mangled, or simple words like matzoh, which she mispronounced.

Don't bother

This is probably the best book I've read/Listened to in a long time. The narrator was really good. The storyline was captivating and it flowed really good. The research was well done.

I found the narration annoying - her Yiddish accent was awful , and her Italian not much better.

how hard is it to pronounce pinochle correctly?

I absolutely love reading different perspectives on WWII. Whether it's family stories or how women were spies for their country, how Jews fought to stay alive, and even how other countries fought for their freedom...I can't seem to get enough of these amazing stories.

WWII Must Read
