About this listen

A charming and delightful reminiscence of growing up loving the woods, waters, fields, and fauna of Massachusetts by Michael Tougias, New York Times best-selling author of The Finest Hours, Overboard!, and Fatal Forecast.

Untamed. Unsupervised. Uncontrolled.

Boyhood in the 1960s and ‘70s was a time for exploration and mischief. Author Michael Tougias found more than his share of misadventures in the woods and on the water: some life-threatening, but others innocently hilarious.

Over time - and after reading a multitude of adventure books - these experiences took shape in his quest to be a mountain man, owning a cabin in the forest and living off the land. Part of that dream would come true, but only after a family tragedy that shook his world and forced changes in his life.

This is also a story of a complex and strained relationship between father and son, the efforts at understanding, and ultimately respect and devotion.

In The Waters Between Us Tougias channels Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods to mix laugh out loud humor with insight into the natural world through the eyes of a curious boy.

Good message, slow read, entertaining

The narrator's dictation is a little slow. The stories are entertaining and relatable. The author's message is sweet and insightful. I enjoyed it.

Beautiful

As a nature lover this book was a wonderful experience. The author pays loving tribute to his family and his life experiences in the wilderness. I wish more kids grew up like this. Nature heals.

Well written and narrated

Seems to be an honest well written autobiography of sorts. I appreciate the absence of foul language and indecent sexual scenes in spite of the potential for them to be exploited. Characters like the author’s father inspire me to believe that God gives us the ability to go beyond what we’re able to accomplish without Him. As long as we are alive He is still here with us. All in all it was a good read.

Ran out of patience

Very slow and quite ordinary. I felt bored even after increasing the playback speed. Could be perfect if you like slow moving coming of age stories less interesting than your own.

Highly recommend

I thoroughly enjoyed this memoir. It is honest, poignant, and a reminder of times goneby, the power of family, and the adventure and cathartic impact of nature.

Great book!

I loved this book. I'm a 69 year old woman but could still relate to this book so much. My brother and I grew up in a family where the outdoors and nature were a huge part. We camped and fished and also spent summers riding our bikes and exploring around our home. Building forts in the woods and getting involved in all kinds of antics. We also had parents who were very supportive and lucky for us even spent more time with us in nature. It was a joy to have this book bring back so many memories. I think if more kids these days had the opportunity to grow up in that kind of an environment we'd have a whole lot fewer problems in this world today. It provides a grounding like no other that helps throughout your life. As for the speed of the narration, it was no problem for me. I found that it gave me time to reflect on what was being said and gave me a sense of relaxation and peace.

Ok

All in all the story was interesting, however I thought it would benefit from less animal cruelty stories as well as an ending that tied things up. The author was the narrator of the book and his voice is very boring and humdrum. I would not listen to another one of his books if he is the narrator.

Enjoyed every single word!!

I grew up in the same time period and parts of it could have actually been written about me! Loved that the writer was the person telling me the story. Michael..you took me back to places I've forgotten from my childhood..I thank you for that! Can't wait to hear your other books!!!
