About this listen
There is a feeling in the air of our era. People are yearning to laugh again. Those who appreciate good humor, however, know that something is amiss. There is no way around it: wit nowadays is in a bad way. Fine wit longs to be written again, but most writers have no idea how to render something witty or humorous upon the page. They often assume that such instances are left up to serendipity or chance.
Luckily, they are wrong.
By analyzing the elements of wit employed by such eminent humorists as Evelyn Waugh, Mark Twain, and P.G. Wodehouse, The Ways to Wit nourishes one’s comedic sense, deepens one’s sense of irony, and ultimately teaches one what it takes to write excellent, humorous wit.

Story
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone? Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

A must read for fans of great humor
Joshua C Smith manages to develop a masterclass in wit, and the greatest writers of it, while still presenting the material in a thoroughly enjoyable fashion. Equal parts a lesson in great writing and a humorous summer read, this book will surely appeal to students, fans of these great authors, and those looking for a good laugh. Excellent narration in this audiobook version as well. Highly recommended!

A Delightful Exploration of Humorous Wit
"There are two tragedies in life: one is not getting what one wants and the other is getting it..."- Oscar Wilde - Antithesis Wilde
The Ways to Wit, by Joshua Smith, functions as a mini-catalogue, highlighting the distinct forms of wit practiced by literary giants like Oscar Wilde, G.K. Chesterton, and Charles Dickens...
This work is more than just a collection of essays; it’s an invitation to revisit these classic texts with fresh eyes.
Narration by James Fowler was perfectly suitable to the style of the book. The narration was clear and fluid, and the tone used is fitting and engaging.
It is a gem for anyone interested in literature, humour, or the art of language itself. It's both an enjoyable audiobook and a good resource.
