Grimblewaith has risen through the ranks of the Beandom Highway Patrol, and when his boss asks to see him, he hopes it’s for a promotion. Instead, he is tasked with saving an old friend, now forced to lead the notorious Mafaea family. But to infiltrate the Mafaea ranks and rescue his friend, he must become faekind, a feat that only a phoenix could help him accomplish. When the phoenix proves a finicky negotiator, Grimblewaith must search the Beandom for something to bring the phoenix to his side. With others vying for the phoenix’s powers, Grimblewaith must prove that he’s no ordinary whatsit if he hopes to survive to save his friend.

I really enjoyed this story. I found this story both silly and amusing. My funny bone was tickled by the idea that Grimblewaith needed to negotiate with a phoenix in order to become faekind, so that he could save his friend. I was entertained by the ridiculous songs and rhyming phrases which made me laugh out loud. I thought Kevin Perkins' narration was superb, and his performance added to my enjoyment of the story. I was given a copy of the audiobook. I volunteered, without financial gain, to post this review which reflected my honest opinions regarding this audiobook.

Grimblewaith, a dedicated member of the Beandom Highway Patrol, is pulled from his routine duties and given a risky mission: rescue an old friend now entangled with the powerful Mafaea family. To succeed, he must become faekind—a transformation only a phoenix can grant. With rivals also seeking the phoenix’s power, Grimblewaith must outwit them all and prove he’s more than just a loyal patrolman.

The author, Michael Young, has a great writing style and a clear talent for crafting fun, adventure-filled stories. The fae world is described in rich detail, and the characters Grimblewaith meets along the way are unique and well-developed. The clever rhyming woven into the story adds a creative touch that really fits the tone, and the dialogue flows naturally. It’s an action-packed, engaging read that’s both entertaining and imaginative from start to finish.

Narrator Kevin Perkins brings this story to life with fresh, unique voices for each character—and keeps them consistent the whole way through. His delivery is smooth, energetic, and perfectly matches the fun tone of the book. Honestly, it’s hard to imagine anyone else narrating this story as well as he does. In fact, I am impressed with his ability to say the rhymes without error or cracking up with laughter!

This is a wonderful and entertaining tale.

What a fun story! This book reminded me a bit of The Phantom Tollbooth with all of the word plays, and it had a lot of clean, kid friendly fantasy too! I really enjoyed listening to it! The narrator did a great job with his portrayal of all the different characters!

Fun!

This one was shorter than the previous books, or at least felt like it was. Overall, the story is still interesting and still reads like a Monty Python script.

Short, but still good.
