Critic reviews

"The Gales are an amazing family, the aunts will strike fear into your heart, and the characters Allie meets are both charming and terrifying." (Number one New York Times best-selling author Charlaine Harris)

Alysha's Gran is still lurking.

This is the second book in what I hope will be a lengthy series. The plot in this book follows Charlie, who was a lesser character in "The Enchantment Emporium." I really like the idea that she works much of her magic through her music. The other character who takes a step forward in this book is Jack. I really liked him in "Enchantment" so I was glad to see him get more time onstage in this story. Many of the other characters from the previous book are back again too. The Aunties are busy making pies and annoying phone calls again. Even the magic mirror is back, handing out its usual enigmatic hints. And Alysha's Gran is once again lurking in the background, trying to manipulate everyone (for their own good, of course).

I'm happy to say that I liked Erin Moon's narration better than the narrator for "Enchantment". She made no attempt at Irish or Chinese accents, but she did a much better job with everything else.

If you like urban fantasy, I think you'll enjoy this one. A lot.

Great read!

Great read... It's the perfect sequel to an also good book (The Enchantment Emporium). The book follows previously undeveloped but well liked characters, moves locations and situations and generally rocks on its own.

Enjoyable but feels incomplete

Any additional comments?

Overall an enjoyable listen (Tanya Huff is talented enough that she is incapable of writing unenjoyable books) but it feels like the resolution could have used something.

Hard to follow

What did you like best about The Wild Ways? What did you like least?

I enjoyed the first Enchanted Emporium book, but I did read it in print rather than listen to it. I really wanted to like Charlie's story and for the most part I did. I think that Huff's style made this difficult to follow when listening. There are a lot of internal monologue moments in with the dialogue and that was very tricky to follow. She also tends to move the story from character to character with only page breaks which of course, don't exist in an audiobook. I found myself having to go back and figure out where I was in the story a lot.

If you’ve listened to books by Tanya Huff before, how does this one compare?

I've always read her books rather than listen to them and I think I'll do that from now on.

Which scene was your favorite?

I enjoyed the scenes with Jack trying to learn to live as a dragon in the Mid-Realms.

Did The Wild Ways inspire you to do anything?

Listening to The Wild Ways made me want to listen to Celtic music.

Any additional comments?

I really wanted to like this book because I love Tanya Huff. I wasn't too keen on all the cousin sex in the first book and I was pleased that it was toned down a lot in this book. I still prefer the Keeper series to this one. I wish there were more of them. They make me laugh a lot!
