Story
At the start of WWII, the U.S. found itself in desperate need of an intelligence agency. The Office of Strategic Services (OSS), a precursor to today’s CIA, was quickly formed—and, in an effort to fill its ranks with experts, the OSS turned to academia for recruits. Suddenly, literature professors, librarians, and historians were training to perform undercover operations and investigative work—and these surprising spies would go on to profoundly shape both the course of the war and our cultural institutions with their efforts.

Story
Henry V reigned over England for only nine years and four months and died at the age of just thirty-five, but he looms over the landscape of the late Middle Ages and beyond. The victor of Agincourt, he is remembered as the acme of kingship, a model to be closely imitated by his successors. William Shakespeare deployed Henry V as a study in youthful folly redirected to sober statesmanship. For one modern medievalist, Henry was, quite simply, “the greatest man who ever ruled England.”

Story
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

A historical educational epic
I have been enthralled with the Romans for most of my life, funnily enough but experiences heated floor tiles and a passer by mentioning that this kind of technology sprouted from the ingenuity of the Romans. Ever since then, I have been so excited to learn as much as a can about this highly impressive and intelligent reign. Although Aeon history calls this an “intuductory history of Rome”, I think this is a far more far reaching project. Gary Bartley expertly narrates his way through the history of kinds, emperors, lengends, mythology, historical events, and so much more that could possibly be mentioned here. Excellent history stuff again from Aeon history.

Highly Recommend!
I absolutely loved this audiobook. It's interesting, comprehensive and well structured. Most importantly, my teenager overheard part of it in the car and wanted to listen and learn about history of Rome. That is a rare occasion in my household and a meaningful one I wanted to call out in my review of this book.
