About this listen

Zionism is the political and cultural movement to establish Jewish self-determination in the Land of Israel. It is one of the most astonishingly successful national movements in history: not only did it establish a democratic state in a hostile region, but that state—Israel—became one of the most prosperous, innovative, and vibrant societies in the world.

Israel's critics ascribe that success to nefarious plots, a "Zionist conspiracy" that evokes primitive antisemitism. But the true "conspiracy" is simply a set of positive virtues and strategies that other people—including the Palestinians—can apply to achieve their own goals.

The word "Zionist" itself deserves to be a common noun, with a lower-case "z"—not in the pejorative sense that "zionism" is often used, but to describe a strategy that accepts that one may have to change one’s methods, or even one’s identity, to reach the goal.
