About this listen

Sommer Kappel's whole world crashed in a single day. Her professor is beaten by Nazi brown shirts and hauled away. She learns she is pregnant. And her boyfriend tells her he has just joined the SS.
She didn't know what to do. She doubted if her mother would take her in. And in her panic, she agrees to become a spy for the British, who fly her back to Canada to have her child, still unsure how her mother would react. She becomes romantically involved with a British army officer, who sees her off.
Sommer is a math genius and won a scholarship to study math at Bonn University before the outbreak of the war. On her return to Germany, she is quickly seconded by her old Bonn professor to work on a secret project for Hitler.
Shortly after returning to Germany, she is hounded by a Gestapo officer, who does not believe her story and is convinced she is a British spy. In his desperation, he tries to poison her slowly.
After trying to escape, she spends her nights at a special prison for political prisoners.
She clings to one hope -- that she will be rescued, even though she knows it would be impossible from a prison.
