About this listen

Winner of Military Writers Society Award.

I have waited for over 45 years to tell this story, initially because I just wanted to forget the war and get on with making a living and raising a family. The other reason is that, 45 years ago, the American fighting man was not held in very high esteem. No one was ready to hear anything good about the Vietnam War or about the men who fought and died there.

This book is less about me and more about the sacrifice, incredible hardships, and heroic actions displayed by the Marine grunts that I had the privilege to treat during battles on the demilitarized zone. It's about time you heard the truth about their story.

A must read for man or woman to understand what our brave Marines went through for our freedom

As a young woman I could never imagine what it was like for the Marines that served our country in the Vietnam War. But after listening to this beautifully written novel, I can now feel a little closer to what some of those experiences looked like. This is the real story of a Navy Corpsman serving with the marines in a Vietnam tour. Larry’s story is so engaging that he will have you laughing one minute and completely sobbing the next. This is an enormously touching story of war, friendships, and family that is appropriate for readers of all ages. Brian Avers does an exceptional job at telling this emotional story. Not once did I feel like I was listening to audio book in my car. Instead Brian made me feel as though I were on the battle ground right there observing. For not having ever served, I will never fully understand what these young Marines went through. For both the ones that paid the ultimate price and for our vets still here with us today, I thank you for your service and will forever be grateful. And to the #1 Vet in my life, OOH-RAH, Dad. I am so proud of you.

Fantastic Book

I’m a big fan of military non-fiction books. This one happens to be the second Vietnam era book I’ve listened to, as well as my 29th military non-fiction book overall.

Out of all of the books I’ve listened to this one was unique. The words written here by Mr. Miller will stick with me forever. This has become my hands down favorite title that I’ve ever listened to or read.

They called me Doc

This was such a great book. I had no real idea what our service men and women actually went through. The narrator was fantastic in telling the story. Thank you to all the men and women who served and sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

Breathtaking!

I believe that this book should be in all the high schools for the students to realize how lucky and how brave all these young men and women who sacrificed their time and some their lives for our freedom. This book puts you into the situation of the war and how Larry dealt with taking care of these brave young soldiers. It is a book that is hard to put down. I always had respect for our soldiers and medics but even more so now.

With humor, horror and resolve his story takes the reader through the trenches of Vietnam as only one who lived through it can. Brian Avers dramatic narrative brings his story to life!

Great read/listen! 5 stars across the board!

This book is a truly great read/listen. I do suggest picking up the printed version as well, the maps and photos included make the book even more relatable. The book is educational, enlightening and entertaining. The authors words paint every scene perfectly. I’ve know many Vietnam Vets but never understood their experience like I do after reading this book. Amazingly the author is able to convey his sense of humor in between scenes of heroism and tragedy. The narrator makes the book even more relatable as he breaths life into every person in the book from the Drill Sargent, to the wailing mother of a fallen soldier.

I am grateful for having read this book. There are stories and people in this one that I will never forget.

Outstanding Story

This is a great story of what it was like for many young men during the Vietnam war. It is a snapshot into the life of just one young man of millions sent to Vietnam and the unbelievable things that a 20 year old should never have to deal with. But deal with it they did with honor and pride! The story will make you laugh and make you cry hearing the accounts of what Doc Miller went through from childhood to coming home after his tour in Vietnam. Brian Avers does an amazing job reading this story and makes the listener feel as if they could see the characters themselves. It is apparent that the story touches him as much as the author as he recounts the people, places and events of the life of a Marine Corpsmen during the Vietnam war. I highly recommend this book to everyone. This story will touch you!
