Publisher's summary

Smokey Dalton and Jimmy, the young boy he protects, have settled into a new life on Chicago’s South Side. But when Smokey gets hired to investigate the death of a black man in a local park, he realizes that the murder might not be an isolated case. The Chicago Police Department doesn’t really investigate black deaths, particularly near the South Side. Smokey thinks the case easy, until he digs deeper into the history of the area, a history that includes gangs, racism, and secrets so dark they threaten his very existence.

Chosen as one of the top 10 mystery novels of the year by the Chicago Tribune, Thin Walls shows why Publisher's Weekly gave it a starred review, and Booklist calls it "another fine entry in an outstanding series."

Critic reviews

"This is mystery fiction at its highest, most gripping level." (Chicago Tribune)
"Somebody needs to say that Kris Nelscott is engaged in an ongoing fictional study of a thorny era in American political and racial history. If that's not enough to get 'serious' critics and readers to pay attention to her, it's their loss." (Charles Taylor, Salon.com)

Continues to be great

I have listed to all the books up to this point and just downloaded the next. The character are richly drawn and you get a true feel of what it was like to be black in the late 1960s. smokey dalton, the main character is a complicated man who lives and helps people in a way that show complicated man who helps people both inside and outside the law. It's worth the listen I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Another Awesome book

I really enjoyed this story. I like that the plot keeps you guessing with multiple stories intersecting. You know clues are important but not always sure which case it belongs to. I'm very glad I decided to listen to this series and looking forward to book 4.

Worth reading and re-reading

I discovered the Smokey Dalton series about a year ago with bargain (kindle) edition of the sixth in the series. Since then I have read three more. These are some of the best written detective novels that I have ever read. I am utterly amazed that the author Kris Nelscott can provide the realism for a black male in late 60's. I have both read and listened (audible) to this book and others in the series. I highly recommend them to anyone interested in gritty detective fiction.
