About this listen

A side-splitting and heartbreaking tale, now a major Hollywood movie starring Tina Fey, Connie Britton, and Jason Bateman.

Poor Judd Foxman returns home early to find his wife in bed with his boss - in the act. He now faces the twin threats of both divorce and unemployment. His misery is compounded further with the sudden death of his father.

He is then asked to come and 'sit Shiva' for his newly deceased parent with his angry, screwed-up, and somewhat estranged brothers and sisters in his childhood home. It is there he must confront who he really is and - more importantly - who he can become.

Funny, moving, powerful and poignant, This Is Where I Leave You is the fabulous follow-up to How to Talk to a Widower and Jonathan Tropper at his best. Read by Ramon de Ocampo

The dark comedy version of "August"

It's inevitable to compare "This Is Where I Leave You" with Tracy Letts' masterpiece "August: Osage County". The families, their behavior and the similar situations makes you think... But then again, who doesn't have a dysfunctional family? That's a privilege that only a few people can be proud of. And yet, Jonathan Tropper's book has a life of its own and shines marvelously. His dark humor is just delicious, poignant, right on cue, acid and very clever. It's such a joy to read wonderful and well constructed characters, so flawed and real, so annoying and lovable. The kind of story I love and the kind of people I have seen in real life, with a happy ending and lessons to be learned.

I loved it, even though it has times when the rhythm slows down, and some parts can be cut off.... I enjoyed it so much, laughed out loud a bunch of times, cried and shocked equally, and I still don't know where to begin to talk about it to not spoil the fun and joy of it. Mort does and he asks his family to sit shiva for him, so his astonishing for her age wife and four children have to get together and find a way to stand each other, through memories, fights, old wounds, failure, resentment, cheating pregnant wives, old lovers, visitors and food. It's the recipe for disaster and the trick of this incredible book.
