These are short discussions of Sts. Augustine, Jerome, and Ambrose, delivered by Thomas Merton to fellow monks at the abbey. Key selections are read in Latin, then translated and discussed by Thomas Merton, with questions and answers from the monks. It is pretty quick-fire delivery: They have about 20 minutes for each talk, ending with a short prayer.

This is a special-interest work (reason for the 3's), being concerned as it is with the practical implications of these ancient books for members of a monastic order. It does provide good examples of Merton's lively teaching and lecturing style and his particular "take" on theological subjects. There are some interesting "asides" to then-contemporary current events in the wider world, such as Soviet space missions, as well as life within the abbey.
