About this listen

1986: Adrien, Etienne, and Nina are ten years old when they meet at school and quickly become inseparable. They promise each other they will one day leave their provincial backwater, move to Paris, and never part.

2017: A car is pulled up from the bottom of the lake, a body inside. Virginie, a local journalist with an enigmatic past, reports on the case while also reflecting on the relationship between the three friends, who were unusually close when younger but now no longer speak. As Virginie moves closer to the surprising truth, relationships fray, and others are formed.

Valérie Perrin has an unerring gift for delving into life. In Three, she brings listeners along with her through a sequence of heart-wrenching events and revelations that span three decades. Three tells a moving story of love and loss, hope and grief, friendship and adversity, and of time as an ineluctable agent of change.

Intriguing

Another great read by Valérie Perrin! Loved the story...narrator's voice maybe a bit sad but she did well portraying all the characters...enjoyed it.

struggle

well the ending was worth the struggle through 30 something chapters before it became a part of me. I almost stopped when I got to 30 thinking this was never going to make sense. I am glad I finished but I didn't like having to work so hard for a good ending.

Great story

Took a while to get going but worth it. Lots of character development. Keep notes on the names since they are French.

This book slayed me!

…I have not been so riveted to a story in quite some time (and I have read/listened to some tremendously satisfying books).
Valérie Perrin character development and plot twists were so satisfying. Her fresh writing skill set kept me in constant intrigue.

The reader/voice is phenomenal despite her having to portray many characters.

I will listen to it again! And I’m sure it will feel like the first time.

Heartbreaking story

This was another amazing story by French author Valerie Perrin. Wonderfully narrated from various character’s POV’s. I love the intimacy of the characters, as well as the hopes and dreams and sadnesses. This novel’s small moments and details are what makes it standalone and makes it so charming and personal and special.

On the other hand, it became confusing on audiobook because there are so many different characters who aren’t really identified at the beginning of each h chapter. The narrator was fabulous as all characters but once again, a title or intro would have helped so much to identify the personalities.

I love her writing!!

Excellent contemporary theme.

As an adult I find interesting revisiting my childhood and teenage years with the characters and their experiences … how lucky some of us are to have important friends through out various moments of our very different lives. We all should use stories like this one to make our own reflections later on as adults…

plain and.borong

very boring trite and selfindulgent. It is not a reverie' but a soup of everything melanchonic, so dull and solipsystic.

Made it to chapter 2

It was like listening to someone’s shopping list! This is the first book that actually irked me! I got more and more annoyed with each long boring tangent about nothing. Hopefully it will get better. But I can not continue to listen. Definitely returning!

Narration is awful

It’s a 22 hour listen and it gets good at around hour 17.
So… If you need to kill some time, this is the book for you. The dialogue is stilted, or perhaps the fault lies in the performance. The narration is not good. Weird cadences and repetitive intonation.
