About this listen

Author of At Play in the Fields of the Lord, national Book Award-winner Peter Matthiessen is an accomplished naturalist and one of the most acclaimed writers in the world. This book is a stirring look at the tiger, a magnificent animal that has long fueled human fascination. In critical danger of extinction, only a few thousand of these giant cats remain. Matthiessen's exquisite prose stunningly captures the tigers' dramatic fight to survive.©2000 Peter Matthiessen (P)2000 Recorded Books, LLC Animals Biological Sciences Conservation Environment Outdoors & Nature Science Travel Writing & Commentary Tiger

A difficult book to listen to, with all the geographical locations and tiger variety descriptions. So narrow in scope, written for specific interests. Very dry.

Tedious Read

Matthiessen is one of the great writers of the last 30 years. Far Tortuga, The Snow Leopard, At Play in the Fields of the Lord are all masterpieces. Unfortunately Tigers in the Snow is an eco-potboiler, rehashing familiar arguments for conservation and laments about endangered species without taking us anywhere new. The writing feels humdrum and its easily possible to find more strongly felt expressions about the environment. Skip this one.
