About this listen

Introducing Geralt the Witcher - revered and hated - who holds the line against the monsters plaguing humanity in the best-selling series that inspired the Witcher video games and a major Netflix show.

Geralt the Witcher has fought monsters and demons across the land, but even he may not be prepared for what is happening to his world. The kings and armies are manoeuvring for position, each fearing invasion from across the river, each fearing their neighbours more. Intrigue, dissent and rebellion are on all sides.

The Elves and other non-humans are still suffering under decades of repression, and growing numbers join the commando units hidden deep in the forest, striking at will and then dissolving into the trees. The Magicians are fighting amongst themselves, some in the pay of the kings, some sympathetic to the elves.

And against this backdrop of fear and contempt Geralt and his lover Yennefer must protect Ciri, orphaned heir and sought by all sides. For the prophecy rests on her, and whether she lives or dies she has the power to save the world - or perhaps end it.

Having played Witcher 3, I was keen on understanding more of the lore and history leading into the game. This book begins to fill in and bring together some of the backstory leading into the game and so far has been the most enjoyable of the series. Spent a considerable amount of time rewinding back to earlier chapters and noting down the different characters to keep track. Look forward to hearing more about the changing environment and characters In next novel.

So far best in the series

Any additional comments?

Better than the great first book Last Wish, and reading The Time of Contempt made getting through the mediocre prologue novel Blood of Elves very worth it. Better translation too. Lots of attention to detail and side characters that served to make the main story stronger. Ciri and Geralt really go through some difficult changes which makes this novel all the more interesting. The dialogue is excellent like the other works in this series. And last but not least, I definitely recommend the narrator Peter Kenny. He has become one of my favorite narrators of fantasy, and I haven't found many good ones in this genre. He kept the pace appropriate to the action, the chases, the struggles to survive or the more contemplative moments, and he actually speaks in different mannerisms depending on which character we're with while still speaking very clearly. Good show!

Masterful gritty dark fantasy a must-listen

Another wonderful Witcher book, this one with a bit more fictional politics, and we see more character depth developing in our main favourites. Peter Kenny's narration made the tedium of the politics a whole lot more palatable. He is a genius and perfect for this series!

Best narrator ever!
